Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge Nears Completion, Gets Toll Plaza

Lekki-Ikoyi Suspension Bridge is West Africa’s First
West Africa’s premier suspension bridge also called the Adiralty-Ikoyi or lekki-Ikoyi bridge is nearing the final stages of completion. The bridge which has all the amenities of a 21st century infrastructure project comes complete with a toll plaza, walkways and streetlights.
The project was contracted out to Julius Berger and has already received global recognition having being featured by Cable News Network (CNN).
According to a statement from the contractors the bridge is scheduled for completion by year end.
The statement read, “Final bridge finishing works are ongoing. The overall completion of West Africa’s first cable stayed bridge is scheduled for the end of year 2012. The pylon with its two legs clearly characterizes the appearance of the bridge. Due to its special shape, the pylon is filigree and very striking. Up to a height of 50 m it is A-shaped, then the pylon legs change to the form of a fillet and, because of this, are inclined to the outside at the top.
“The legs are not touching in the area of the cable anchorage but are subsequently connected with each other by means of crossbeams. In addition, the outer dimensions of the shafts continuously taper from 6.4 m x 4.8 m at the base to 4.1 m x 2.4 m at the narrowest point – in order to create a 3.0 m widening on the front side at the upper end. The highly difficult in-situ works were carried out by means of self-climbing formwork systems. The upper top of the pylon legs was constructed with precast elements.
“The pylon and cable-stayed construction technology used in the construction of Admiralty Alexander Link-Bridge has never before used in Nigeria,” according to officials of the company. He said, “through the construction of the bridge, Julius Berger’s pioneering role in technological development is showcased once more.”
