Assassins kill 60-year-old woman, 2-year-old grandson in Ogun

Suspected assassins have murdered a 60-year-old woman, Amoke Musuru, and her 2-year-old grandson, in Ago-Oba area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the suspected assassins at about midnight on Sunday broke into the one-room apartment of the woman in the storey building located within the Ajiko compound. The building is a family house that belongs to the victim’s husband’s extended family.

Gaining access into the room while the woman and her grandson were asleep, the suspects smashed the head of the duo with an iron rod, causing prompt death. The rod was left behind.

Other residents of the building said they were not aware of the attackers’ presence and heard no noise.

When PREMIUM TIMES visited the scene, the blood of the deceased littered the room where the 2-year-old Baliqs and his grandmother, popularly called Iya Saubana, were murdered.

Officers of the Ogun State Police Command who visited the scene took away the corpses for autopsy. The bodies were later handed over to the family for burial. Those arrested and interrogated were later released.

However, the sons of the late woman, Saburi Moshood and Hakeem Moshood, while speaking to PREMIUM TIMES expressed shock over the ugly development.

The children, who reside in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, said they came to Abeokuta to make arrangements to exhume the corpse of their paternal grandmother for re-burial as the on-going road project by the state government affected the initial burial site.

Saburi Moshood explained that their mother was killed a night before they arrived.

‘We arrived the family home, without any fore knowledge of the killing, but we started suspecting something went wrong the way residents were greeting us. We went straight to our mother’s room and sadly we found her lifeless body and of the grandchild on the floor,” he said.

“The police came, discovered the iron rod used to kill them, took it away as exhibit, and also took away corpses, which were later released to us for burial, and we have since buried them,” he added.

The children said they hand over the culprits to God. They alleged that some members of their extended family could be behind the killing and they would never return to the family house.

“What else are we coming to do here? Our mother was killed alongside her grandson; our paternal grandmother could not be re-buried as we planned. There is no point in looking back after we leave,” Saburi said.

The building is one of those to be demolished by the Ogun State Government, for road expansion, and for which compensation is expected to be paid to the family.
