#FoodForThought: “If blacks had guns, they would never have been slaves” – Republican guns right advocate

It never fails, whenever pundits want to manipulate black people on an issue, they relate the issue to slavery or Martin Luther King Jr. The most recent example of this sort of rhetoric came this morning, when Larry Ward, appearing on CNN, said that blacks would never have been slaves had they had guns. (They also would never have been slaves if white people hadn’t enslaved them, but where’s that conversation?)
Ward is coordinating  a gun appreciation day for the weekend of President Obama‘s second inauguration, and some critics have questioned the gun celebration for its proximity to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Ward wasted no time responding to that criticism.
“I think Martin Luther King, Jr. would agree with me if he were alive today that if African Americans had been given the right to keep and bear arms from day one of the country’s founding, perhaps slavery might not have been a chapter in our history,” Ward told CNN host Carol Costello.
Co-panelist Maria Roach of United for Change USA called Ward’s comparison “ridiculous”  and said Gun Appreciation Day was just theater and a ‘power play’ by the right.
One thing’s for sure, if Gun Appreciation Day takes place on the same weekend as inauguration, that will make for an interesting mix of people in Washington D.C. That may very well be what many would refer to as a perfect storm.
