The uncommon effort of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in tackling the menace of terrorism in the country culminated in the evolution of a National Counter-Terrorism Strategy (NCTS), which result has been the drastic reduction of security breaches and violence that hitherto held the nation to ransom.

The NCTS document, which culminated in the establishment of the counter-terrorism department in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), is now the blueprint for the on-going battle against Islamic insurgency spearheaded by the dreaded Boko Haram sect.

This is just as a source in the presidency dissociated the ONSA from the existence of an illegal training camp on ‘anti-smuggling and small arms proliferation in Enugu. Reports, according to our source had linked ONSA with the purported scam. “The office never gave any letter to anybody to be nominated for training in the said camp.” the source said.

The source, who revealed this exclusively to THISDAY yesterday said that this document is now the apex government’s magic wand in its bid to wipe out shocking acts of terrorism in the country.

The document, which was shown to THISDAY, provided shared views and analysis on recent terrorist trends, modalities of enhancing internal coordination to combat terrorism, capacity-building of criminal justice and law enforcement agencies.

According to him, the recent deployment of 1200 Nigerian troops to Mali was part of the initiatives made in realisation of the objectives of the NCTS document. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) had during the departure ceremony of about 100 Nigerian soldiers from Kaduna airport to Mali for the peace keeping mission, Thursday stated that Nigeria has "evidence that some of the terrorists operating in Nigeria today were trained in Mali."
