The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the All Nigeria Peoples Party
(ANPP) and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) yesterday took a
major step toward their planned merger in a bid to form a strong
opposition that could unseat the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
in 2015.
The three major opposition parties named their teams to work out the modus operandi and structure of the proposed mega party.
While the CPC announced an 18-member panel known as Merger/Alliance
Committee headed by former deputy governor of Bauchi State Alhajii Garba
Gadi, the ANPP unveiled a 20-member team headed by the former governor
of Kano State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau. Details of the membership of the
ACN panel were sketchy but former chairman of the party, Chief Audu
Ogbeh, made the list.
There was however disquiet within the CPC last night as some members,
who were allegedly not well disposed to the composition of the
committee, opted out of it.
In a statement issued yesterday in Lagos, CPC’s national publicity
secretary, Engr. Rotimi Fashakin, said the party’s national leader, Gen.
Muhammadu Buhari, is expected to be present at the inauguration of the
committee on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at 10am at the CPC National
Secretariat in Abuja.
Fashakin named Gadi as the committee’s chairman while the members are
Prof. Tam David-West, Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State,
Alhaji Sabo Nanono, Senator Hadi Sirikaz, Chief Okoi Obono Obla and
Owelle Oscar Udoji.
Other members are Engr. Ife Oyedele, Osita Okechukwu, Chief
Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, Mrs. Lucy Ajayi, Air Commodore Bernard Banfa (rtd)
and Engr. B. D. Lawal.
There are also Dr. Haruna Yerima, Mr. James Ocholi (SAN), Alhaji Adebayo Shittu, Prof. Buba Bajoga and Dr. Osagie Ehanire.
LEADERSHIP SUNDAY learnt last night that ACN’s negotiating team
includes Chief Tom Ikimi, Chief Segun Osoba, Senator Chris Ngige and Dr.
Lame. An ACN official, who spoke on the party’s list, said the planned
“alliance will work because the three parties are determined to rid
Nigeria of PDP misrule”.
The members of the ANPP committee include the governors of Yobe
State, Ibrahim Gaidam, Kashim Shettima (Borno), Abdulaziz Yari of
Zamfara State, Hon. Ismaila Kawu and Chief George Moghalu.
