Opposition Threaten Legal Action Over Absentee Governors

Criticisms have continued to trail the whereabouts of some governors, who have been absent from office in the last three months and opposition parties have threatened to take legal action against the affected State Houses of Assembly.

The absentee governors are Liyel Imoke of Cross River state, Sullivan Сhime of Enugu state and Danbaba Suntai, Taraba state. The three governors have been out of office beyond the constitutionally recognized 90 days. The opposition parties in the state are threatening actions if the states Houses of Assembly do not invoke Section 189 of the 1999 Constitution.
The section provides a number of steps that should be followed when a state governor or his deputy is incapacitated. Speaking at a news conference on Thursday in Enugu, a group by the name Enugu Young Professionals gave a deadline of February 18, 2013 for the Enugu state House of Assembly to invoke Section 189 of the Constitution and transmit executive powers to the deputy governor of the state.
Meanwhile, a picture emerged on the internet on Wednesday of the Governor with three of his colleagues who had paid a visit on him at his undisclosed location abroad. Clad in winter jackets, the Governors of Akwa Ibom, Benue and Rivers joined the Governor of Enugu state who is reported to be convalescing abroad in the picture.
Mr Chime has been last seen in public in September 2012. In Taraba state, the opposition parties have also asked the state House of Assembly to activate Section 189 of the Constitution to verify the true state of the governor’s health.
