Oshiomhole Blames Oyerinde’s Death on Doctor’s Nonchalance

Governor Adams Oshiomole of Edo State, yesterday, in Asaba, Delta State, lamented what he described as the decay in the medical sector, particularly as some personnel allow patients to die due to strikes or absence from duty, noting that his former Private Secretary, Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde, might have survived if he was attended to promptly, when he was rushed to hospital after he was shot.
Speaking at the opening of the 1st Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, National Health summit in Asaba, Governor Oshiomole said it was unethical for any doctor after subscribing to the Hippocratic oath, allow patients to die because of strike or outright neglect.
Oshiomole said: “I was shocked when, after my Private Secretary was shot and was rushed to Central Hospital in Benin, Edo State, the doctor on duty did not open his door for 30 minutes. When the door was eventually opened, he came out with a nurse. We were wondering whether they had converted the office to a bedroom.

“We are not going to speculate what could have happened but just to say that these are serious ethical issues and NMA should be ruthless in dealing with any of its member found wanting for any reason. After Oyerinde breathed for 30 minutes, he was gone.”
Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuichi Chukwu in his key note address, said he had directed that “on no account should cases which could be handled by some of our private health facilities be referred from government teaching hospitals to private hospitals overseas.”
President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, declared the occasion open which was attended by the governors of Abia, Anambra and a host of dignitaries, including the host governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan.
