PDP crisis: Jonathan considers dumping Tukur

by Isi Esene
There are indications that president Goodluck Jonathan may have decided to accede to the demands of Peoples Democratic Party governors by withdrawing support from the apparently out-of-favour party chairman, Bamanga Tukur.
Sources say Jonathan’s strategists have made it clear to him that it would not be in his political interest to openly confront the governors who have always proved to be powerful and capable of exerting much influence in the polity.
President Jonathan was reportedly advised to choose a younger candidate with fewer political baggage compared to Tukur.
The PDP governors have been at daggers-drawn with Tukur over  his  alleged unilateral dissolution of the PDP executive in  Adamawa State, where he hails from.
“In the next few days, Tukur will know his fate. Already, some of the President’s aides and governors have started prevailing on him (Jonathan) to leave Tukur to his fate. Pressures are being mounted on Jonathan to consider picking Tukur’s successor from Borno or Yobe,” the  source, who pleaded anonymity said.
In selecting these states, it was considered that the usual friction between a party chairman and his home state governor would be avoided since these states are currently not governed by the PDP.
“We cannot afford the power play between a national chairman and his governor. The best thing is to pick the national chairman from a non-PDP state if it is possible,” the Presidency source said.
The governors dominate the party’s National Executive Committee. Last Wednesday, they issued a communiqué demanding for the NEC meeting where  they are planning to pass a vote of no confidence on Tukur.
