The
Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party has said it needs the
assistance of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in the selection of
his sucessor as the chairman of the board.
The Secretary of the PDP BoT, Senator
Walid Jubrin, said this in his message at a grand reception organised
for Obasanjo by the South-West zone of the party, following his
resignation in 2012 as the chairman “on personal reasons.
He said, “Obasanjo is a true Nigerian;
he is an international person. He is someone every Nigerian should love.
I must say that the people of the state, and indeed Nigeria, must be
very grateful to this illustrious son of Nigeria.
“Obasanjo is for all; he is for all
Nigerians. And that is why we’re here from the West; from the East; from
the North and from the South. We’ve all gathered here in this historic
town of Abeokuta to celebrate with our Baba.
“He’s our leader; we shall continue to follow him. We’re for Baba; we shall continue to deal with Baba. We’re with Baba and we’ll continue to be with Baba. On behalf of the BoT of our party, I want to congratulate Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
“This Baba left the BoT and up till today, we have no chairman. We need Baba on how to get the new chairman.”
President Goodluck Jonathan, who was
represented by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, lauded Obasanjo for his
leadership roles in the country.
Governors who took turns to laud
Obasanjo included Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State; Rochas Okorocha
of Imo State; Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State.
Jonathan and Obasanjo have disagreed on
the choice of the new chairman of the board. While Jonathan rooted for a
former BoT Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, Obasanjo reportedly backed a
former chairman of the party, Ahmadu Alli.
Consequently, the last meeting of BoT members at the Presidential Villa on January failed to produce Obasanjo’s successor.
