Local food production rises to 8.1 million Tonnes

Okra Produce at Food Market
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina yesterday disclosed that Nigeria’s local food supply and production has risen to 8.1 million metric tonnes.

The Minister disclosed this at a seminar on Agricultural Commodity Value Chain Development in Nigeria, organised by the Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI) in Abuja.

Adesina stated that the country will soon graduate into a major food exporter and stop the importation of staple foods following the development of value-chains.

He said, “We should be exporting food to other countries instead of importing it, especially in areas that we have comparative advantage.

“Nigeria must be a food self-sufficient nation. Our food produce has reached 8.1 million metric tons. The era of food importation will soon be over hence machineries have been put in place to take care of this.”

“Dialogue with Boko Haram won’t end the crisis in Nigeria” – Group

A group, under the aegis of Forum for Justice and Human Rights Defence has said that the proposed peace talks between Nigerian government with angry Islamist sect -Boko Haram would not end the crisis in the country.
According to its National Coordinator, Mr. Oghenejabor Ikimi, the government might end up negotiating with the wrong group.
He insisted by asserting that negotiation was not what the Federal Government needs at the moment, stressing that the panacea depends on good governance.
Ikimi lamented that the country had been a victim of bad leadership since independence “owing to a mediocre and unpatriotic leadership that has pervaded the polity.”
It would be recalled that pioneer Chairman of PDP, Chief Solomon Lar also warned the Federal Government not to welcome the proposed peace talk until the sect members unmask themselves.
The sect over the week accepted to dialogue with the Federal Government, proposing Saudi Arabia as the venue.
It also nominated prominent Northern politicians such as Gen. Muhammad Buhari, Senator Bukar Abah and others as mediators.

Governor Yakowa allegedly imposing EFCC suspect to emerge as Local Government Chairman

Kaduna State Governor, Mr. Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa has been accused of imposing an incredible candidate to emerge as chairman of Jema’a, his Local Government Area.
It was learnt that the candidate identified as Daniel Amos, along two others, was earlier prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2005 in Lagos State for collecting over three million Naira by false pretence.
Reports say the governor is conspiring with the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other party top shots in the State to produce only one candidate, in the PDP primaries despite evidence of his prosecution by the EFCC.
Investigation revealed that Amos was arraigned before an Ikeja court on August 5, 2005, but allegedly disappeared after the first hearing.
Insiders say the trial is still on and the EFCC are currently looking for him.
