The wedding fatiha of the two daughters of Vice President Namadi
Sambo started on a colourful note yesterday in Kaduna and would have
gone down in history as memorial for the couples, their parents and
well-wishers but for one sad incident: A row between two Islamic leaders
over a particular prayer.
In the rowdiness that took the shine off the event as the followers
of the Islamic clerics engaged in a shouting match, security details
hurriedly took Sambo out of the venue of the ceremony.
Trouble started at the famous Sultan Bello Mosque, Kaduna venue of
the event when after conducting all the formalities for a wedding
fatiha, two respected Islamic clerics, Sheik Dahiru Bauchi and Dr. Ahmed
Gumi were asked to offer a special prayer for the couples.
Sheik Dahiru Bauchi started by reciting ‘Salatil Fati’ and ends it with the same ‘Salatil Fati’ according to his belief.
When Dr. Gumi took the microphone, he said “Malam Dahiru Bauchi ought
not to recite Salatil Fati in this Sultan Bello Mosque, since we have
different views and understanding on the suplication.”
His statement stirred a row between their followers, a development
that made the guests including the vice president to immediately rush
out to their vehicles and left the venue.
In a reaction, Sheik Umaru Sanda, one of the lieutenants of the Sheik
Bauchi said they were not happy with the conduct of Dr. Gumi and
advised him to guard against such utterances, especially in the public.
Similarly, Sheik Yusuf Sambo Rigachikum, said the open confrontation
was unnecessary, especially when the two Islamic sects headed by Gumi
and Bauchi should have used the wedding of the VP’s daughters to end the
age-long rivalry.
The wedding fatiha was contracted amidst tight security in and around the mosque.
One of the vice president’s daughters, Huwaila Sambo was married to
Muktar Gambo Ruma, who paid N50, 000 as bride price, while Auwal
Abdurrahman, who wedded Aisha Sambo paid N250,000 and five cows, which
was received by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, who stood as the father of the
brides
The Chief Imam of the mosque, who presided over the event, Shiekh
Balele Wali, congratulated the couples and prayed Allah to bless them
with children and enduring wealth.
Dignitaries at the event included former head of state and Congress
of Progressive Change (CPC) presidential candidate in the 2011
elections, Gen. Muhammad Buhari, governors, ministers, senators, members
of the House of Representatives and traditional rulers.
The marriage, which was scheduled to commence at 11am kicked off at 11:15am.
Babangida gave their (brides) hands in marriage on behalf of Sambo to their husbands.
Meanwhile, entrance to the wedding venue was initially strictly on
invitation as 100 metres to the venue was cordoned off by armed security
operatives, as vehicular and human movements were diverted to other
routes.
The wedding reception later took place at the Hassan Usman Katsina House, which was also under tight security check.
The governors of Kano, Jigawa, Kebbi, Imo, Nassarawa, Taraba, Cross
River, Gombe, Katsina, Abia, Anambra, Kogi, Kwara, Bauchi, Oyo and
Kaduna states attended the event.

Delta youths sack workers in Chevron facility
by Joe Ogbodu, Warri
ANGRY
Ijaw youths, on Friday took over Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) Gas
Pipelines Project after chasing away workers of the international oil
firm from their site in Abeteye, Escravos, near Warri, Delta State.
This came as the Nigerian Naval denied giving approval to any firm to commence the evacuation of petroleum products from wrecked vessels that were confiscated for illegal oil bunkering activities in the Niger Delta region.
Youths who attacked the Abeteye site said they were protesting the recently renewed Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) between Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), Egbema/Gbaramatu Communities Development Foundation and the Delta State Government in which their community was allegedly, misrepresented.
They also claimed a lack of basic amenities in their community, which they said Chevron had failed to provide as agreed.
According to witnesses, angry youths, numbering over 500, stormed the site in which 16-inch Gas Pipelines were being constructed for Chevron from the Abiteye Flowstation to Escravos, seized it and chased out the workers.
The fierce-looking youths said they are not comfortable with the GMoU and their alleged foot-dragging of CNL in sand-filling of Benikrukru community, as well as such other concers as the pilling of the community, sweeping of the canals and their stake in the Regional Development Council.
According to them, the GMoU was signed without their approval.
It would be recalled that at the wake of the signing of the GMoU, members of the Benikrukru Community after an emergency meeting held November 13, sanctioned those who signed the GMoU and threatened to mobilise women and children in the days ahead to cripple the Abiteye Flowstation and other facilities of Chevron in their area.
The Friday event in which the multi-billion naira Gas Pipelines Project of CNL being handled by an indigenous firm seems the making good of the threat.
It was learnt that the protesting youths arrived the site with several boats and ordered all workers out from site but no one was hurt.
When contacted for his reaction, Chairman of Benikrukru Community union, Chief Jeffrey Ojogun claimed that act could have been as a result of a feeling that CNL was trying to cause disaffection and disunity in Benikrukru. He therefore implored the oil company to stop meddling in the affairs of the community in the interest of peace.
According to him, “Apart from the issue of the vexed GMoU.” the people “are demanding from Chevron the sand-filling of our community, pilling of the community, sweeping of the canals and our stake in the Regional Council.”
Efforts to get reactions from Chevron officials proved abortive as at press time.
Meanwhile, the Naval Headquarters, Abuja has denied giving approval to any firm to commence the evacuation of petroleum products from wrecked vessels that were arrested by the military for illegal oil bunkering activities in the Niger Delta region.
Making this clarification in a telephone conversation with our correspondent, the Chief of Training and Operations (CTOPs), Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogboi, noted that there was no truth in the claim by a firm, Fenix Impex Nig. Ltd., that an approval has been given to it for evacuation operation along the Delta Coastal area.
According to Ogboi, “we have not issued approval to Fenix Impex or any other firm to commence the evacuation of product from and seized vessel in Niger Delta waterways and we do not intend to, until the Directorate of Petroleum Resources (DPR) provided answers to very many questions we have asked them concerning this exercise.”
The naval chief further stated: “We have been asking DPR to furnish us with detail information as to the nature of the product in these vessels, estimated quantities, the destination of the evacuated products and hazards posed in the course of the exercise but up till now, we are yet to receive such information.
“We cannot therefore issue any approval to any company when we are yet to get these details, so it will amount to fraudulent act and mischief for any firm to come up to say the Navy has given it approval to commence evacuation.”
He described such claim as false, baseless and unfounded and advised security agents to be on their guard to ensure the arrest of any vessel seen on the waterways claiming to be on evacuation operation based on the approval from the Naval Command.
It would be recalled that in 2009, two vessels, MT Concept and Ezomo came up with similar claim of evacuating a seized vessel at the Warri Jetty but such approval was later discovered to be fake.
Investigation revealed that claims of evacuation can be used by illegal oil bunkerers to carry out their operations, as unauthorised firms can present such approval documents as a way of beating the watchful eyes security agents while embarking on oil bunkering.

Fresh Pressure On Obama, Clinton Over Boko Haram
From Laolu Akande, New York
FRESH
pressure is mounting on the US President Barack Obama and the outgoing
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to designate Nigeria’s Islamist
group, Boko Haram, a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) before the end
of Obama’s first term next month.
At the White House, an ambitious effort has been launched by a team of several US groups led by Jubilee Campaign and supported by the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans (CANAN) to mobilise thousands of Americans to sign a petition addressed to President Obama, demanding the designation.
According to the petition, already posted on the White House website, the organisations and the petitioners observed that despite all the uncontested evidence on the activities of Boko Haram, “the US has refused to designate Boko Haram a Foreign Terrorist Organisation.”
The petition, which has to get 25,000 signatures by December 29, to have the US President respond to it, stated that in the last three years, Boko Haram has killed an estimated 3,000 Nigerians, adding, “they have directly targeted helpless Christians, and any Muslims who dare to disagree with their genocidal ambitions.”
CANAN in a statement said it was mobilising the over 1,000 US-based Nigerian churches to get their members to endorse the petition within the time limit, so as to get a response from the White House.
Opening up the White House website to Americans to petition the US government is one of the initiatives of President Obama to bring the US government closer to the American people. But his administration has been reluctant to go after Boko Haram as a group.
Rather in June, the US government designated three leaders of the group as terrorists, but fell short of declaring the entire group an FTO, a situation the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor described in July at the US Congress as “hypocrisy.”
Similarly, at the US Senate late last week, an amendment to a bill sponsored by Senator Scott Brown, a Republican from Massachusetts State, was passed demanding that the US State Department should “report on the designation of Boko Haram as a foreign terrorist organisation, and for other purposes.”
The US House of Representatives version of the same bill, sponsored by Congressman Pat Meehan, is being revived, according to the Congressman’s office, which is working with CANAN, to shore up national support for the bill .
However, the Nigerian Ambassador to the US, Prof. Ade Adebowale, is known to be working closely with members of the US Congress to avoid the designation of Boko Haram.
He is arguing to US Senators and Representatives that while Boko Haram must be stopped, a designation may not be the right approach.
It will require both US houses of Senate and Representatives before the bill can be forwarded to White House for signing into law.
But one of the US groups working with Senator Brown’s office and in Congress generally to push the bill, Frontline Missions International, is expressing optimism that with the passage of the bill in the Senate, a new onslaught has been launched against the indecision of the US State Department on the issue of designating Boko Haram.
According to John Hutcheson of Frontline Mission International, “we have been lobbying the US Congress on this matter since the State Department has been unwilling to designate Boko Haram, and this is great news,” (passing of the bill in the Senate recently).
Legislative Aide, Michael Spierto, said Congressman Meehan is seeking co-sponsors to reintroduce his concurrent legislation in the US House, demanding designation of Boko Haram by the State Department as an FTO.
Spierto added that Meehan and CANAN would soon do a joint press statement “in order to call attention to Boko Haram and why the Congress bill on the matter is necessary.”
The US groups pressing the issue of Boko Haram are, however, not focusing only on the petition drive and lobbying the US Congress to legislate; a number of them have also submitted a legal brief to US Secretary of State Clinton, showing how legally Boko Haram has met the US legal requirement for designation as an FTO.
The group includes Advocates International, Alliance Defending Freedom, CANAN, Jubilee Campaign, American Centre for Law and Justice, Catholic Family and Human Rights Institution, Igbo League, Family Research Council, Institute on Religion and Democracy, Justice for Jos Plus and the Westminster Institute.
The legal brief running into 66 pages says, “Boko Haram has threatened US interests and attacked US citizens,” already.
The brief noted that one American, who is a UN official, survived the attack on the UN Building in Nigeria in August 2011, while another US official escaped.

2015: North in disarray…Why Jonathan may return
Come 2015, President Goodluck Jonathan will run, Sunday Sun can authoritatively reveal, but the north will also field a candidate. Interestingly, indications that the north was ready and willing to stop Jonathan in 2015 first emerged in Kaduna, the political headquarters of the north, in May this year.
It came from no other than the chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum, NSGF and Niger State governor, Muazu Babangida Aliyu. He had while making his opening remarks at one of the governors’ forum meetings stated among other things that “we must also know that by 2015, we are going as united constituent group.
There were times when we went as constitutionalists and federalists, and some as regionalists, this time around, we must do everything possible within the time period to unite ourselves and to go that time as a united group.?“The interest of the people is paramount, we must understand that, and we must also understand that political parties are platforms and it is the interest of our own people that should guide our actions, our interests and our activities.”
However, the cacophony of voices among different groups within the region in recent times, Sunday Sun investigations reveal is not suggestive of the fact that the north was ready to present a “united and formidable” force against Jonathan’s 2015 ambition.
Yet, Sunday Sun further gathered that the plot to stop Jonathan from running was real, and that the various meetings going on in the north and Abuja, were indicative of the resolve by the north to stop Jonathan, at all cost, another source added. Last week alone, two gatherings went on simultaneously in Kaduna and Bauchi. Although, none had 2015 as part of its objectives, as the two gatherings put the quest to develop the north as the major agenda, Sunday Sun can authoritatively reveal that the two gatherings have the trappings of 2015.
For instance, while that of Kaduna was spearheaded by a coalition of northern groups, under the auspices of Arewa Research and Development Project, led by Dr. Usman Bugaje, a former Political Adviser to Vice President Atiku Abubakar, that of Bauchi was held on the platform of the North-East Alliance for Transformation, NEAT, spear-headed by Jonathan’s Senior Special Assistant on Energy Partnership, Mallam Ibrahim Shehu Njidda. Interestingly, when a similar gathering was held in Bauchi earlier this year by elders from the zone, under the auspices of North-East Forum for Unity and Development, NEFUD, which attracted the likes of General TY Danjuma,
Mallam Adamu Ciroma, Professor Jubril Aminu, Alhaji Mohammadu Bello Kirfi and Atiku’s representative among a host of other prominent personalities from the zone, almost all those who attended NEAT’s summit in Bauchi, last Thursday, including the governors, shunned it. Sunday Sun’s investigations however revealed that prominent northern leaders including General Abdulsalami Abubakar, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Dahiru Musdapher, Senator George Akume and Kaduna State governor, Patrick Yakowa, attended the Kaduna gathering.
Historically speaking, while incumbent governors lost nomination of their parties, and even lost during gubernatorial election where such incumbents decided to change party, no sitting President has either lost nomination of his party or the general election, since the country’s independence in 1960. Will Jonathan’s own therefore be different? “You may be right that history does not in any way support what we are planning to do. But I am one who believes that events and not personalities should shape history.
To that extent, we are of the firm belief that events would ultimately throw up the situation that will force Jonathan to bow to voice of reason, instead of allowing himself to be embarrassed and disgraced out of office, because we are resolved to do this. “Just take a look at the men around the President, tell me who among them can win election. The Vice President cannot deliver his base, Gulak (President’s Political Adviser) cannot win election in Adamawa, Anenih has been confined to the dustbin of political history and his Chief of Staff too, cannot win election.
So tell me who will do the job for him? “Come to the north, again I agree with you that no single politician has the type of mass appeal that Buhari has. But you and I know that Nigeria’s presidential election goes beyond mass appeal in the north. At any rate, the votes in the north alone cannot make him President. It might be impossible, but I also believe that if the likes of Buhari and Atiku can bury their ambitions in the interest of the north and join in the search for a credible and acceptable person from among us, I think Jonathan may even chicken out of the race,”.
One of those involved in the surreptitious moves to unseat Jonathan, but who is currently part of the present administration, volunteered. However, another prominent politician who was neither part of the two gatherings held last week, but who is also a prominent member of the PDP from the North-East geopolitical zone told Sunday Sun that except the north changes strategy, the presidency may still elude it in 2015.
“First of all I am also surprised about both meetings. I agree with you that the way the two meetings went on, all supposedly in the interest of the north did not show any unity of purpose on our part. For me, I see the Bauchi meeting as more of a government thing. Because when a similar meeting took place in the same Bauchi State in the past, none of the governors attended. “Now for a meeting of that nature that attracted the likes of TY Danjuma, Jubril Aminu, I think the governors made a big mistake by not attending, that is, if truly they are interested in developing the region.
Again, those who attended last Thursday’s summit did not reflect that it was peopled by persons who matter in the region. Don’t get me wrong, I know the governors are so powerful that they decide what goes on, but they need other stakeholders too. I think the Kaduna meeting had a better attendance in terms of prominent persons in the north”, the high ranking PDP member added. As part of the strategies to stop Jonathan, Sunday Sun further learnt that members of the opposition, especially from the South-West are also toying with the idea of presenting Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, as an alternative.
The belief in this group is that, it could repeat what it did on the floor of the House, where the Speaker and his deputy were elected to the chagrin of the PDP, through the support of the opposition parties. Sources close to the Speaker’s office however told Sunday Sun that the Speaker was not favorably disposed to such an idea.
He was quoted to have said he would not want to end up like two of his predecessors who were “used and dumped “and became irrelevant in the scheme of things. Those close to the Speaker were also said to have warned him to be wary of “ an unworthy project that will not fly”. “You know, they deceived Na’Abba, that he is the true leader of the representatives of the people, same goes to Bankole. But how many of these people in the House can win election without the support of their governors?
So this is why we are cautioning the Speaker. And thank God, he is the type that not only listens, but one who knows what is right and appropriate,” another source added.

2015 presidency splits South-South govs
by: Remi Adelowo
There are strong indications that President Goodluck
Jonathan’s re-election bid in 2015 has caused a major division among
South-South governors, his home region.
Although the parting of ways over Jonathan is still a carefully guarded secret at the top, The Nation learnt that some of the governors are so crossed with the president that they have entered into political alliances with other possible contenders, a move that is certain to rattle Jonathan’s return ambition in 2015.
Unlike what obtained in the 2011 general elections when all the South-South governors threw their weight behind Jonathan’s election as President, the 2015 election is poised to be dicey. This time around, except Jonathan acts fast to save the situation, it seems two, out of the five South-South governors, are no longer queuing behind him.
The South-South governors that may have withdrawn their support for Mr. President, according to impeccable sources, are Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and Cross River State Governor, Liyel Imoke.
According to sources close to Amaechi, he is of the view that the next presidential race should not be based on ethnic considerations, but that the best candidate from any of the regions in the country should emerge as the next president.
But beyond his opposition to ethnic affinity in deciding the 2015 race, sources close to him revealed that Amaechi’s cold war with the president is a fall-out of the alleged plan by federal authorities to cede about 45 oil wells in the Kalabari area of Rivers State to Bayelsa, the president’s home state.
Despite the president’s assurances that he was not using his executive powers to favour Bayelsa State in the oil well controversy, Amaechi, according to sources, feels otherwise.
At a town hall meeting held in Port Harcourt recently, Amaechi, according to a source, told the audience that the reason some powers-that-be have decided to deny Rivers State of the oil wells boils down to the politics playing out ahead of the 2015 elections. He allegedly accused the president of attempting to clip his wings so as to stop him from supporting an opponent in the 2015 presidential election.
Imoke’s grouse is also connected to oil wells. We gathered that Imoke’s anger is traceable to Mr. President’s alleged indifference to the plight of Cross River State after it lost substantial oil wells to the neighbouring Akwa Ibom State in a case that dragged on to the Supreme Court. The decision of the highest court of the land deprived Cross River State of huge revenue.
A source told The Nation that “The unanimous opinion of many Cross River State indigenes, including the governor, is that the president, after assuming office in 2010, should have used his exalted office to broker a political solution to the oil well issue, rather than allow the state to lose out completely.”

How We Killed 10 Armed Policemen In Lagos - Robbers
FEMI OGBONNIKAN
Ejike Mbogu, a member of a deadly gang of six that has been
terrorizing Lagos and Ogun States, has told the police how they wasted
10 policemen who dared to stand in their way.
Ejike who is the number two man in the gang, spoke on behalf of other members from the SARS detectives’ cell.
“We killed 10 policemen and had their guns (AK47 rifles) carted away, five of the slain policemen were from Ogun state command, while the other five were from Lagos state command.
In Lagos alone, we killed two policemen in Oko-Oba, one in Iponri and two others in Ejigbo area. Also, in Ogun state police command, two policemen were shot dead in Abeokuta and another three in Ibafo area”, Ejike, the 33-year-old suspect said.
He pointed out that the 10 rifles were used for their various robbery operations on banks and Bureau De Change outlets in Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, Kwara, Ondo, Kogi and Edo states respectively. Out of the 10 guns, Ejike confessed, he took one (now recovered), while nine others were shared out among others.
Among the gang members, Ejike disclosed that the duo of Ope and Isong are currently being held in protective custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Ogun State Police Command headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.
According to the Awka, Anambra state-born suspect, the two suspects were arrested shortly after a robbery operation in Abeokuta, following a painstaking intelligence gathering.
“On every big operation, especially bank raids, we usually merged with other gangs. We usually went in a large number, at times, we will be almost 20 on every operation. We have four gangs led by Kingsley, Wale, Goke and Emmanuel.
“Take for instance, the raids on First Bank Plc in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state capital and Share branch, Kwara state, were well coordinated, as we were about 18 members who participated in the raids. We were all fully armed to the teeth, as we made use of dynamites and GPMG”, confessed Ejike.
