The
stakeholders in the Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic
Party (PDP) in a show of support for President Goodluck Jonathan,
yesterday affirmed that he is the leader of the party in the state.
They also declared that his former running mate Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, was the President’s political benefactor.
The stakeholders at a caucus meeting of members held in Government
House, declared Jonathan as leader of the party in the state. The motion
which was adopted by 28 members of the party’s caucus after a motion
initiated by Senator Emmanuel Paulker, was sponsored by Bayelsa Governor
Seriake Dickson.
The President in his speech urged aggrieved members to sheathe their
swords in order to move the party forward. He denied allegations of bias
and preference for some candidates for elective positions in the state.
He said: “I don’t want to be in Abuja and be seen as influencing
political contestants; I will not condescend to get myself in the
selection of candidates, I’m not interested, because it won’t be fair
since leadership is all about hierarchy.”
He reminded the people that politics should be an avenue to serve the people and not a battlefield to settle scores.
Governor Dickson on his part said, the meeting was a new beginning in
the state chapter of the party, as the era of acrimony and discord was
over.
Calling for unity among members, Dickson said: “The most important
challenge Bayelsa State has had to contend with is the issue of
mobilizing support for President Jonathan, which is why we want to
convene this meeting once every quarter.
On the forthcoming local government poll in the state, Dickson stated
that the party was ready, while advising party supporters to avoid
actions capable of jeopardizing the peace and tranquility in the state.
