Saving The Nigerian Family In The US – Nigerian Men Regretting Getting Married To Nigerian Women In The US?

By Paul Omoruyi
Shooting in Connecticut and Matters Arising in the Nigerian Families in the US – By Paul Omoruyi

The grotesque and senseless killing of 20 innocent kids at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut in the United States is something every parent dread daily in the US. Early reports already show that the shooter’s parents were divorced since September 2009 and the mother had custody of the shooter. The mother had exposed the shooter to guns!
With the unprecedented divorce rate in the Nigerian community in the US, Nigerian families in the US are increasingly becoming engrossed in all the family related patterns and miasma leading to these kinds of incidents.

Early this year, I wrote an article in an African Abroad newspaper that was widely published in the New York area. This writer has been disturbed for some time now about the state of the Nigerian marriage and family in the United States. Below is the original article:My phone rang. It was a call from my buddy that we started life together in the US. We talked about those early days when we just immigrated. Those are the days that will remain etched in our minds and indelible in our memories. Like so many Nigerians, we worked and went to college full time non-stop for many years concurrently as if we were machines. The impetus to achieve the American dream and not disappoint our families was the catalytic enzyme running through our veins. Till this day, we still cannot fathom how we did it. But we did anyway. It’s one of those kinds of experience that you can only say “if not God”.
We were in our twenties with all the Adrenaline and testosterones running wild. The stories of Nigerian men that have been messed up by “child support” because they got married to “akata” were sufficient enough for us to respect ourselves and control our sexual drives. My friend would always say “I go just die or go back to Naija than for me to find myself in a child support situation. Akata no go fit cook Naija food and then she go come still take me to child support? Over my dead bodi”. These concerns (or should I say fear?) were reasons my buddy did not go into any relationship with some of his college female friends who were not Nigerians. He wanted a Nigerian woman as a wife so they can speak pidgin English together, eat Egusi and Okro soup yanfuyafu (otherwise with Akata wife, na Burger King go kill am!). It was all too common a joke back in the days.

Many years have since passed. My guy is married now with a degree attached to his name and has a middle-class job. Obviously, you can say he’s living the American dream. As we reminisced and laughed about those Kodak moment days, in a split second unguarded moment, he suggested that there was nothing special anymore about getting married to a Nigerian woman in the US. “They are now even worse than the so called akata”, he said. The comment struck me and I pushed a little for him to elucidate. I listened in awe as he told me what he’s experiencing at home. While he poured his heart to me, he kept asking me “do you think say Akata or even Caribbean woman go behave like that”? Apparently, it appears his expectations have been dashed.

One that struck me most was the story of a young Nigerian teenage girl living in the shelter. Her Nigerian parents are now divorced. According to her, her parents’ marriage broke after her mother systematically stopped cooking for the family, became increasingly narcissistic and disrespectful to her dad. As if that was not enough, her dad was infuriated when he discovered that her mom had secretly bought a piece of property in Nigeria without his knowledge. Two years later, the parents divorced. Unfortunately, the young lady became pregnant while still in high school. “I just could not stand my mom and live with her. If my parents were still married, I would not have fallen for this stupid crap”, she was quoted as saying, as tears rolled down her eyes.

Although I understand that these narratives might be loop-sided but it seems to typify what most Nigerian men are complaining about lately behind closed doors. There are numerous cases of marital fuss and upheaval that have permeated Nigerian families in the US in recent years. Some people say it is the American culture shock that is rocking the boat of traditional Nigerian family structure in the US. Others claim that it is Nigerian women narrow-mindedly over stretching the American provisions.  While some lay blame on Nigerian men refusing to wake up to the realities of the disparities between the American and Nigerian approach to marriage.

It is heartbreaking to hear a Nigerian man refer to his wife as my “baby mother” and a Nigerian woman says my “baby father”.  Just some couple of years ago, this was a taboo terminology in the Nigerian marriage. It was actually used to surreptitiously mock the so called “akata”. Now it’s becoming a common mantra in the Nigerian community as single mothers and fathers balloon to an alarming and astronomical rate.

This is no time to pass blame or point fingers or to clamor over who is right or who is wrong. The hand writing is on the fall. This writer is whole-heartedly concerned and perturbed by the downward spiral of our marriages and families in the US. The younger generation is watching, confused and scared to death of what to expect from taking that marriage bold step.

In the spirit of finding a solution, I will proffer the following suggestions to reduce this scourge that is eating deeply into the fabric of our families:

1.    Each spouse should not think that the world revolves around you only –Either my way or no way mind set is a recipe for marital failure.
2.    Think twice “welu welu” before you let loose the heavens and lock that door against your spouse – you might be endangering your children’s future for life!
3.    Marriage is a symbiotic and not a parasitic relationship.
4.    At life’s end, the fight over dollars will be no more. Your spouse and your children will become more important than anything else.
5.    There is no perfect woman or perfect man. The only perfect marriage is one that the man and woman have learned how to resolve their differences and work together through thick and thin.

People, we are better than this. Let us all fine tune our dispositions and propensities to make our marriages and families happier right here in the US. We have come too far away from home to kill ourselves in a distant land. The system is ready to tear us apart if we open that door. Do you have an opinion or experience that you would like to share? Shoot me an email. May God bless you, your family and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Mad Woman Miraculously Regains Her Senses after Being Hit by a Car

trbnThe story has been told about the miraculous cure of a 40-year-old mentally ill woman who has been simply identified as Olubisi Aina at Sanyo area of Ibadan, Oyo State on Tuesday, 11th December, 2012 after an auto accident.
According to the Tribune, which reported the story, the way and manner in which Olubisi Aina regained her sanity after about a decade or more of insanity is amazing and it could be described as a wonder. Aina had been insane for 10 years or thereabout and paraded herself, most often nakedly, on the Sanyo-Temidire-Agbamu road, her habitation for over a decade.
She usually slept on her back with her face up in drainages or on the main road close to the bridge on Damo River in the area; and come rain or shine, Olubisi was always in her habitat and is well known in the neighbourhood. Perhaps that was her saving grace on Monday, 10th December, 2012 when a car ran over her where she was sleeping at about 9a.m.
Olubisi was quickly rushed to Oore-Ofe Hospital and Maternity Home where her bruised mouth and legs were attended to. However, after being discharged, patron of the hospital, Mr Toyin Adesina, advised that she should have a bath. She was later led by acquaintances to Damo River where she was given new sponge and soap for her bath. As she raised the sponge above her head, she said “Thank you God” in Yoruba Language. Instantly, she regained her sanity and whatever question was posed to her, she answered accurately!

As she ran along pushing her little boy in his toy car, Selma’s baggy knitted cardigan fell open – displaying her incredibly bony chestplate.
The Anger Management actress, who went bra-less and narrowly avoided a wardrobe malfunction on the energetic morning out, also looked extremely tired – her make-up free complexion only serving to draw attention to the heavy bags under her eyes.
Despite Selma’s clear stress, the actress did her best to concentrate on spending time with her 16-month-old son.

Arthur looked adorable in a striped all-in-one, with a gilet and hat over the top to keep him warm.
And the little boy certainly appeared to be enjoying himself, beaming and giggling with delight as he explored the local area.
Selma gave her son a hand as he waded through the sticks and twigs in the local area, keeping a close eye on Arthur as he toddled off exploring.

The actress is doing her best to move on, following her split from Jason in August – just 14 months after they welcomed Arthur into the world.
The actress and her fashion designer partner, who had been dating since 2010 were alleged to have parted ways because they couldn’t stop arguing.
A source told Us Weekly magazine: ‘They were fighting non-stop.’
Selma rather vaguely commented on her relationship status in September on Twitter, writing: ‘I never announced anything. They choose to write whatever they feel. I do not have a new boyfriend. My son is it.’

Reliance On Rice Importation Will Cost N23.4 trillion

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, has disclosed that the Federal Government about $150 billion (N23.4 trillion) could be spent by 2050 to meet the demand of a  population that has an increasing demand for imported rice.
Speaking at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) workshop on Financing Nigeria’s Agricultural Revolution, Dr Adesina said “Nigeria is now the largest importer of rice in the world. As our population rises, demand for rice is projected to rise from the current level of five million MT to 36 million MT by 2050. Unless Nigeria begins an aggressive import substitution programme for rice, it will spend $150 billion annually importing rice by 2050 and the nation will be broke.”
Dr Adesina who has been driving a robust agricultural policy of encouraging and wooing investment and funding of local production in the country, stressed the need for the nation to take a bold step in food security  strategies. He says the strategies would make Nigeria self-sufficient in the production of rice by 2015.
He said “To encourage the production and milling of local rice, the Federal Government has raised tariffs on imported brown rice and finished rice. The policy is working. In the last 12 months, 13 new rice mills, with a total capacity of 240,000 MT, have been set up by the private sector.”
The Minister also seized the opportunity at the forum to reveal that the nation now has local rice flooding the market that are as good as the imported rice, some of them include Miva and Ashi rice in Benue, Umza rice in Kano, and Ebonyi rice in Ebonyi.
Efforts by the Ministry of Agriculture in sensitizing Nigerians on the need to  begin to value locally produced rice as compared to the imported considering the costs are commendable, but it is expected a more proactive public/private sector partnership  will help boost the production of the local rice.
With this assertions made by the Minister   a lot has to be done in ensuring that the Commercial  and Peasant farmers are encouraged in the production of the local rice and other foodstuffs. China had a robust policy like these and this was able to position them as a leading food producer in the globe.
It is expected that the aggressive agricultural policy unveiled by the ministry will be sustained, this will guarantee not only massive agricultural production and a boost in the sector, but food security.

Pilot’s Bombshell: Lagos International Airport Has No Runway Light

The deplorable state of Nigeria’s airports was once again brought to the fore as a pilot, Benson Ikponwosa on Monday said Nigeria’s premier airport in Lagos, the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, has no light and poses a danger to travellers who arrive or depart from the airport.
Mr Ikponwosa said the runway lights were destroyed when the road was resurfaced and thereafter, has not been replaced.
He said: “If planes were coming into Nigeria at night and for any reason the light on the runway closer to the domestic terminal fails then all those airplanes would need to go to Cotonou, Lome or Ghana.”

Yakowa ’s Wife To Emerge As Kaduna State Deputy Governor

YAKOWA wife Yakowa ’s Wife To Emerge As Kaduna State Deputy Governor

The widow of the late governor of Kaduna State, Mrs Amina Elizabeth Yakowa, is set to emerge the deputy governor of the state following the death of her husband in a helicopter crash on Saturday.
The plan to tap Amina as the deputy to the newly sworn-in governor of Kaduna State, Dr. Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, is being championed by northern governors across party divide, top northern politicians and governors from other regions of the country with the aim of sustaining Yekowa’s legacies.
Those promoting the move to install Yakowa’s wife could meet with President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo later this week. The insisted that Mrs Yakowa was the best candidate for the position. She was a former deputy director at the Ministry of Defence and only retired after her husband became governor.
The promoters said they were also inspired by the example of the wife of the former Senate President, Mrs Margery Okadigbo, who emerged to take over her husband’s slot in the Senate. They also alluded to the recent example of a former Senator from Plateau State, Sen. Gyang Dantong, who was similarly succeeded by his wife, after he was killed by gunmen at a funeral in the state.
Mrs Yakowa was born on May 20, 1953 in Kwoi, Jaba Local Government of Kaduna State.
An educationist, she holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Bayelsa helicopter crash: Chopper had ‘engine failure’ after 10 trips

The Nigeria navy executive Agusta 109E helicopter, which crashed yesterday killing Kaduna State Governor Patrick Yakowa, former NSA Andrew Owoye Azazi and four others, had engine failure, naval sources have said.
SaharaReporters learned that the pilot of the helicopter communicated with the control tower in Port Harcourt to report the problem before it crashed to the ground and caught fire. The chopper belonged to the Nigeria navy, but it had been placed at the exclusive service of the president in the Niger Delta region.
The navy has had three Agusta 109E helicopters. In 2007, one of them crashed due to bad weather as it approached the Owerri airport in the night, accompanying INEC election materials. Four persons died in the crash.
The other two, NN07 and NN08, which actively worked the Bayelsa airspace yesterday, were commissioned in 2009.
Sources told SaharaReporters that the choppers had been placed almost exclusively at the service of President Goodluck Jonathan and his cronies, which is the reason why they were deployed to carry VIPs to and from the Port Harcourt International Airport for a private burial event of presidential aide Oronto Douglas that had no official value.
Prior to yesterday’s deadly flight, the naval choppers also carried VIPs to the funeral of President Jonathan’s brother, Meni, less than two weeks ago.
At the time of the crash, the helicopter had reportedly done 10 shuttle trips between Port Harcourt and the burial place of Mr. Douglas’s father in Okoroba. Landing and taking off from the soccer field of a decrepit local school in the town.
The flight was reportedly the last one, but the engine failed some ten minutes after takeoff, leading to the fatal crash.
President Jonathan, who had earlier attended an overnight “Holy Ghost Congress” at the Redeemed Church of God on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway then issued a terse statement which revealed the names of crash victims and the usual promise that a probe of the crash will be conducted.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jonathan has ordered two new luxury helicopters from the same manufacturer, AgustaWestland, the Anglo-Italian helicopter company based in Italy. The two AW 101 VIP helicopters will cost Nigeria $40 million. In 2010, Mr. Jonathan ordered three presidential jets as soon as he took office.
