CAF blames Nigerian officials for failure to transmit AFCON matches live

By

The Confederation of African Football has blamed the Broadcasting Corporation of Nigeria (BON) for bungling its broadcast rights deal of the ongoing African Cup of Nations. Some 100 million Nigerians are currently denied the opportunity to watch the tournament on terrestrial tv.
CAF Secretary General Hicham El Amrani told the press men at the Sandton Sun Hotel on Friday that ‘Nigeria proposed a small bid for the continent’s top competition when it spends so much in getting English and European football rights’.
‘CAF was not ready to bend its rules in favour of any member nation’.
Nigeria was not allowed to transmit the AFCON 2013 soccer tournament on terrestrial TV because BON wanted to pay $1.5 million for the television rights but LC2 the AFCON’s TV broadcast owner requested 4.5 million Euros so Nigeria was cut out of TV broadcast rights.
El Amrani further said that “CAF needs to secure two things. The first is to sustain the maximum coverage of the competition and the other is to respect the laws of the market and the prices,”
“We cannot sell to someone who wants to buy at 20 times less than the usual price, we cannot do this otherwise we will have to close our doors. We cannot survive if we do not sustain the minimum value of our television rights.
“We have seen steady progress in the Nations Cup in the last few years, this is because we are self-sustaining and financially independent.
“Nigeria will go and purchase an English package or European football package at the right price but they want to purchase our package free or at a ridiculous price. We cannot go ahead with that, there is a minimum balance we have to maintain,” El Amrani concluded
Nigeria will meet Cote Ivoire tomorrow at the Quarter Finals of the ongoing tournament in South Africa

Iceprince Zamani turns down Globacom’s endorsement deal, insists on $1m contract

By

Ice Prince has turned down an endorsement deal from major telecom company Globacom, NET has reliably learnt.
Insiders told Nigerian Entertainment Today, during the week, that the rapper was approached with a mouth watering deal to become the brand’s latest ambassador because of his recent successes -the release his first official single ‘Oleku‘, his many local and international awards, and his bestselling debut album ‘Everybody Loves Ice Prince’ in 2011.
But Panshak Zamani doesn’t come cheap. We’re told he’s asking for a whooping sum of $1m (N157,000,000) or no deal.
‘He was serious, he knows his worth and knows they can afford it so he turned the deal down‘, our insider at GLO who wants to remain anonymous tells NET.
Most GLO ambassadors are paid within the N10-N20m range, with D’banj and Psquare being the rare exceptions. Psquare got N240m for a four year deal, as reported by NET exclusively on June 30, 2010
It remains uncertain if GLO is upping the figures for the Chocolate city rapper. But if they concede to Ice’s demands, he’ll become the rapper with the biggest endorsement deal ever. But Ice Prince is cool with that (no pun intended). In the last 20 months, the rapper has become the highest-earning Nigerian rapper, with revenue sources including concert fees and endorsements (he inked a deal with LG in 2012) as well as non-music related deals no one is wiling to talk about.
The rapper’s management has denied the telecoms approached their team. ‘We didn’t get any offer from them, I just confirmed from my team, there’s been no offer’, a rep for Ice Prince says.
A rep for GLO, Charles declined commenting, stating that it was not in his place to do so.

Benitez recalls Malouda – See full list of 25-man squads EPL teams submitted

By

MaloudaAll the 20 teams in the English Premier League, have submitted their 25-man squads, after the January 2013 transfer window closed on Thursday.
Rafa Benitez included Florent Malouda, who before now, was banished to train with the reserves, while QPR surprisingly include Jose Bosingwa, who has been punished severally for indiscipline.

The rules: Each club’s 25-man squad should have eight homegrown players who – regardless of age or nationality – spent three years (or a total of 36 months) in the youth system of a club in England or Wales before they reached the age of 21.
Contrary to reports elsewhere, players aged under 21 can, if required, be named in the 25-man squad as a homegrown player. An Under-21 player is defined as being born on or after January 1, 1989.
Clubs can use an unlimited number of Under-21 players in addition to their 25-man squad. Any player who is left out of the 25-man squad will only be eligible to play in the Carling Cup until January 1. From January 1 to January 31, clubs can make unlimited changes to their 25-man squad. On February 1 a new 25-man squad must be named to run until the end of the current campaign.
If a club chooses fewer than 25 players for their squad it is almost certainly due to them having a large number of under-21 players. Clubs with fewer than 25 players in their squad are still permitted to sign free agents.

“Miracles are mysteries” – Evangelist who delivered woman of horse in Benin

By

Evangelist Silver Wealth Iyamu, the General Overseer of the World Liberation Ministry, found himself in a controversy September 11, 2012 when a woman was said to have been barren for over fifteen years after marriage allegedly delivered a creature that looked like a horse in his church located in the heart of Benin City.
The incident attracted attention both from Nigeria and abroad and it was reported by Sunday Vanguard. It would be recalled that while a consultant gynecologist, Dr. Jerry Uwaifo, said it was not medically possible for a woman to deliver an animal, the church members insisted that it was a miracle.
However, Sunday Vanguard met Wealth,on Wednesday, after a crusade at the Benin Cultural Center, where several people also reportedly received miracles of different types, to inquire about the incident of September last year and he disclosed that the woman in question, who disappeared shortly after the delivery at the church, resurfaced weeks later to see him in his office.
Asked about the woman, the young evangelist narrated: “Our church is a prophetic one and people come all the time and we don’t really know where they come from. They come all over the state and we don’t have the time to find out who they are. On that particular day, that was one of the miracles that happened in the church.
After the miracle, the woman visited twice and she pleaded that she didn’t want to go public so that she won’t be stigmatized. And we agreed because such miracles are for the church and not for the public. I was actually shocked when I read them in the papers.”
“As for the woman”, he continued, “Yes, she attended service once or twice after that incident. She came to see me in the office but pleaded that she did not want attention and that, that was her family decision. She came before Christmas to visit us and I asked her how she was doing she said all was well that she resided in Delta and doing well in her business.
God is working miracles every day and I thank God he is using some of us to do this. Miracles are mysteries, an ordinary man cannot understand the face of the spirit because those who are born of the flesh are of the flesh. They see miracle they don’t understand except if their heart is prepared to understand.
It is just unfortunate that we criticize every good thing that comes to us. Even Jesus Christ was accused that he cast out demons with evil powers. As a man of God that is used to signs and wonders, people must criticize you, I believe that until you are totally rejected, you cannot be totally accepted.
Criticism is part of our ministry, some persons have criticized us in the past, but today they are members of my church. They have found out the truth. Those who are criticizing, I pray for them that God should open their eyes so that they find out the truth and they understand that the gospel we preach is goes with signs and wonders”.

“It is shameful if Nigerians do not have confidence in the Super Eagles” – Keshi

By

Stephen Keshi has slammed fickle fans, who have not appreciated the efforts the Super Eagles have put in so far, at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
The coach said it was “shameful and a pity”, but he wasn’t bothered, as he prepared his team to face tournament favourites, Cote d’Ivoire.
“It’s a shameful thing if my nation do not have confidence in their team. I think it’s a pity. I have confidence in this team and we are ready for Sunday,” he said.
Skipper of the team, Joseph Yobo, also pushed aside the criticisms that has been fired at the team and expressed his belief in the team.
“We respect the Ivorian team because they have got big names in their squad. But this is football where big names have no impact on football. Our team are young and have got determination to excel. We are focused on moving ahead and I believe in this team,” he said.

Lord Lugard Created Nigeria to Last for 100 Years Only-IBB

alt
From former military President, Ibrahim Babangida came a shocker yesterday when he revealed that Lord Lugard created Nigeria to last for only a 100 years.
The self acclaimed evil genius said this in Lagos yesterday at the presentation of 2 books in honor of his foreign affairs minister, Bolaji Akinyemi.

Speaking yesterday Babangida had said “As Nigerians, we are aware of the great doubts that have been cast about what 2014 portends for the continuing existence of our nation. I am aware that Nigerians have taken great umbrage at these predictions. Even Lord Lugard who founded what has been called Nigeria gave it a life-span of 100 years. I regard it as a challenge to our intelligence to ensure that these portends and prophesies do not become self-fulfilling.
“We should engage these predictions on an intellectual level, testing whether the facts justify the conclusions.
“But on a practical and public policy level, we must import honesty into our public policy assessment. First, we must identify the problems that need to be addressed. Secondly, we must address these problems honestly. Thirdly, we must identify the most current and the most appropriate mechanism for addressing these issues.
“Let me make this clear. My position is not dictated by the fact that foreigners are making these predictions. We don’t even need foreigner sources as a reference point. The Nigerian media is awash with alarming news about our problems.
“My position is dictated by my conviction that Nigeria is precious enough to be saved. It deserves an investment of our time and resources to make Project Nigeria a success. But the starting point has to be an admission that we need to fix things.”
Babangida also stated that mistakes of past administrations are putting pressure on the country today though he refused to identify the mistakes or the past administrations that made them.
Said he “Some of the mistakes of the past have now come to haunt us. But let me make one thing clear. Not all these mistakes were made out of callousness or bad faith or malice.
“Most people in office do their best. They act to the best of their ability. Unless we think that our leaders have divine ability, we have to admit that even with all the best of their abilities and even with the best faith and with the best of all intentions, human beings will still make mistakes,”
In his own comments, ProfessorAkinyemi called for a national dialogue saying “Zoning, federal character, rotation, marginalisation of the brightest and the best will only make the much prophesied collapse of Nigeria in 2014 a self- fulfilling prophecy. We cannot build a nation on a system that takes care of the few while condemning the many to penury. A system that cannot take care of the many that are poor cannot save the few who are rich."

Burger King Horsemeat Scandal: Chain Admits That Food May Have Been Tainted

  By
Burger King has admitted that it is possible some of its burgers sold in the U.K. and Ireland were, in fact, tainted with horsemeat.
This is just the latest chapter in an ongoing scandal in the U.K. and Ireland involving beef burger patties tainted with meat from horses and pigs. U.K. supermarket chain Tesco and other companies have also been affected. It's suspected that a meat distributor in Poland, which worked with all the companies in question, used meats other than beef as filler in cheap burgers.
Burger King had originally stressed that its patties are made with 100 percent beef, although it later dropped Silvercrest, the food processing plant that received meat from the Polish distributor.
The Guardian has a statement from Burger King:
"Our independent DNA test results on product taken from restaurants were negative for any equine DNA. However, four samples recently taken from the Silvercrest plant have shown the presence of very small trace levels of equine DNA. Within the last 36 hours, we have established that Silvercrest used a small percentage of beef imported from a non-approved supplier in Poland. They promised to deliver 100% British and Irish beef patties and have not done so. This is a clear violation of our specifications, and we have terminated our relationship with them."
That means that there's no actual evidence proving that Burger King ever served horsemeat, but also that the company admits that some of its locations may have inadvertently done so. Officials have stressed that the horsemeat-tainted burgers do not pose a health risk to consumers.
Clarification: We have clarified the language throughout to indicate that it is possible, but not certain, that Burger King's burgers contained horsemeat.
