Gov. Akpabio and his inappropriate announcement

Akwa IbomSome 11 days after Governors Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Gabriel Suswan of Benue and Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers visited ailing Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State in London and swore he was in fine fettle, even pressing to return home, Akpabio has reportedly told the media on his arrival from London on Friday that this time the Enugu State governor would return in two weeks. The first time the three governors spoke to the press on the controversial subject, they only indicated that the governor was on his feet and had made a sensational recovery. Now, according to Akpabio, a timetable for Chime’s return has been set. Two weeks is a short time; it will soon pass. And in any case what is two weeks compared with the more than four months Chime has spent in hospital, away from the splendour of State House?

When the Enugu State governor’s long absence first assumed controversial dimension, with some political interests in the state asking for the application of either the Doctrine of Necessity or some other constitutional imperatives to declare Chime incapacitated as a prelude to his replacement, his troubled aides swung into action to denounce what they described as uncharitable and amoral moves to unhorse the governor. The governor’s poor health was being malevolently politicised, they wailed. And just as the aides of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua employed subterfuge to throw curious citizens off the scent, Chime’s loyalists have also seized upon all the subterranean tactics they can find to both distract the governor’s opponents and denounce them for being so unfeeling. It was clear that to the aides, their principal’s health condition had become an emotional, not constitutional, thing.
After observing the reactions of the three governors who purportedly visited Chime in London – whether in hospital or out of hospital, we do not know – and their curt replies to media inquiries, Hardball had on January 24 observed as follows: “It is clear that neither Chime nor any of his three august visitors understood the issues involved, and indeed it is no surprise that most Nigerian governors are simply incapable of adapting to the governmental needs of the modern era. If Chime and his fanatical supporters had come clean on his health, regularly updated the public with news of the governor’s health condition, and not take the same electorate for granted, would there be speculations, let alone a wish for some hypothetical evil to befall him? The problem with Chime’s long absence is not whether the constitution had been breached or not; the problem is lack of good faith, disrespect for Enugu people, childish contrivances, and now additional verbal indiscretions from the visiting governors.”
Now, quite unfortunately, Akpabio has seemed to magnify the lack of wisdom displayed by Enugu State officials in the management of their governor’s health crisis. It must be reiterated that Enugu officials and Chime’s aides ought to have opened up on the governor’s health trips, give periodic updates, and if possible a timeline. A governor from another state is least qualified to fill that information gap. Indeed, it is incongruous and even insulting. Above all, it must scandalise us how governors, presidents and high state officials here treat their health crises with demeaning furtiveness. They all give the impression health problems are a metaphysical thing that must be hidden from prying eyes. Is this how barbarously low the country has sunk, or how backward it has become? After many months of lying unconscionably to the public, could Enugu officials finally and kindly issue an official press release on the governor’s health trip and date of return? And let us hope this time that the ‘fit as a fiddle’ governor will honour the timeline.

WE ARE WORKING TO EXPAND THE ECONOMY –PRESIDENT JONATHAN

By MUSA ADUWAK

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has said the Administration was working hard to diversify and expand the Nigerian economy.

President Jonathan was speaking to Mr. Nils S. Adersen, Group Chief Executive Officer, who led a delegation of A.P. Moeller-Maersk Group on a courtesy visit to State House, Monday.

‘We are aggressively expanding other sectors of the national economy, to reduce dependence on oil, and increase exports’, he stated, adding that this would boost manufacturing and enable containers bringing goods to Nigeria to return full.

President Jonathan appealed to AP Moeller-Maersk to assist the on-going effort to speed up clearance of goods from the ports, in order to attain the 48-hour target from the current average of 7 days from the date of arrival.

The President thanked the company for investing in Nigeria.

Earlier, Mr. Nils Andersen told the President that his company had invested $200m in a facility in Apapa, and was putting in another $125 million to expand its capacity to handle 1.2 million containers per year, adding that its facility at Onne Port was being upgraded at a cost of $35 million.

Mr. Andersen said in seven years time, current port facilities in Nigeria would be inadequate, so AP Moeller-Maersk was looking at a billion dollar investment in another port, adding that this was an indication of their confidence in Nigeria.

NFF rejects statement on imminent sack of Keshi

The Nigeria Football Federation has expressed shock at a statement in a national newspaper of Monday, 4th February, 2013 in which former NFF Vice President Amanze Uchegbulam claimed the Federation and the Minister of Sports are planning to sack Super Eagles’ Head Coach, Stephen Keshi after the Cup of Nations finals in South Africa.
“This statement is odious because at no time did the Honourable Minister/Chairman, National Sports Commission, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi sit down with the NFF or sold idea to the NFF to sack Stephen Keshi as the Head Coach.
“We reject this statement in its entirety because it has no legs to stand on and is coming at a period that we are all focused on the very important project of supporting the Super Eagles to win the Africa Cup of Nations,” said Chief Emeka Inyama, Chairman of the NFF Media and Publicity Committee.
Inyama added that the statement was uncalled-for and a terrible distraction to a team that is looking forward to overwhelming Mali. in Wednesday’s Cup of Nations’ semi final in Durban.
“Someone of the stature of Mazi Uchegbulam should know better. We are disappointed by his statement because at no time did the NFF leadership discuss anything like this with him.
“The relationship between the Honourable Minister and the NFF is very cordial and we are happy that we have someone like him in that position at this period. He is a positive person who strives to build, and not to destroy.
“At the moment, the NFF is fully focused on motivating the Super Eagles to lift the Africa Cup of Nations trophy on Sunday, February 10 in Johannesburg.”
“Eagles were excellent”
The Honorable Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi has praised Nigeria’s Super Eagles for displaying unusual grit, determination and brilliance in the victory over  the Elephants of Cote’d Ivoire in the quarter final of the on-going Cup of Nations tournament in South Africa.
Abdullahi said the Super Eagles rose to the occasion and displayed the true Nigerian spirit of never giving up, adding that with the victory the team has shown that it is still a force to reckon with in football in Africa.
He urged the team to maintain the same standard and focus on their next match against the Eagles of Mali. “I have no doubt that with the level of play I saw today  they have the capacity to get to the final of the tournament and even win the cup.
I urge the team to remain focused and disciplined. I congratulate the players and technical team for the excellent performance,” Abdullahi said.

AFCON 2013: Pressure On Nigeria - Mali's Carteron

Mali coach Patrice Carteron says his side are underdogs in their Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against Nigeria, even though they lead the Super Eagles in the Fifa world rankings.

The Eagles are 25th in the world and third in Africa, while Nigeria are 52nd on Fifa's list and ninth in Africa.
Carteron says: "Nigeria beat Ivory Coast, who everyone had thought would win that game. Now everyone thinks Nigeria will win the cup, so the pressure is on them. They've got good young players like Victor Moses and Emmanuel Emenike, and experienced players like John Obi Mikel - and they've got a good, experienced coach, Stephen Keshi. But we have the faith and we are so motivated because we want to give so much to the Malian people. This semi-final is not the end, it is the start of something."
Carteron revealed that Mamadou Samassa, the goalkeeper who was suspended for the quarter-final against South Africa, will return to the starting line-up for Wednesday's game. That is despite the heroics of his replacement, Soumalia Diakite, who pulled off two saves in the penalty shoot-out to see Mali through to the last four. Mali against Nigeria is the first semi-final, and kicks-off in the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban at 1500 GMT on Wednesday.

The Little Rock Nine: Black History Photo Of The Day (PHOTO)

A picture is certainly worth a thousand words. And what better way to celebrate Black History Month than by taking a moment to acknowledge the snapshots of time that represent the struggle and triumph of African-Americans through the years?
As part of our Black History Month coverage, we will be featuring one photo a day that honors years of groundbreaking achievement within the black community. These photos bring tears to our eyes, instill pride in our hearts and motivate us to carry on the legacy of strength and perseverance.
Today's photo was taken on September 4, 1957 when a 15-year-old Elizabeth Eckford was pursued by a mob on her first day of school at Little Rock Central High School. Eckford was one of the nine students who were the first to integrate the school as a result of the groundbreaking Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case. The group became known as The Little Rock Nine.
Although the students were instructed by activist Daisy Bates to wait for her and walk in together, Eckford was uninformed of the new plan when, at the last minute, the meeting place was changed. Because her family did not own a telephone, she was unaware of where the students were congregating and walked up to the school's front door completely alone. She is technically the first black student to integrate a white southern high school.
Take a look at the photo and share your thoughts in the comments section below.
