Nigeria is heading towards failure- eminent Nigerians warn Jonathan

JonathanA group of eminent Nigerians yesterday warned that the country is heading towards failure.
The group, Project Nigeria, which has former Nigeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), Alhaji Maitama Sule and leading constitutional lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, as co-chairmen, at a meeting in Lagos, urged immediate action by the Federal Government to arrest the degeneration of things in the country and ensure the delivery of the requirements of good governance.
It warned President Goodluck Jonathan against proceeding with the 2015 elections without first convoking a sovereign national conference to address the many imbalances in the 1999 constitution.
The group affirmed its faith in and commitment to one indivisible, strong and prosperous Nigeria, but appealed to the political class to share in this commitment so that the country can exist forever.
“We are not a group of people who want to break up the country contrary to whatever you might have heard or read out there. Rather we are committed to the unity of this country and we want all Nigerians, especially the political class, to share this commitment,” the group said in a communiqué at the end of the meeting on the state of the nation.
It emphasised the need for good governance along with its basic requirements in our country, saying: “These basic requirements include justice to all, equal treatment for all, freedom of the individual, transparency and accountability, free, fair and credible elections as well as the security and safety of the people and state.
“The security of the social and economic rights of the people as established in Chapter 2 of our constitution is also one of such requirements.”
Explaining its call for the convocation of a national conference before the 2015 general election, the group said it is to “enable Nigerians as members of ethnic groups, civil society organizations and even as individuals, to be able to deliberate and agree on how and on what terms they intend to co-exist.”
“It is for the people to deliberate on and adopt a constitution that can serve as the supreme laws of the land. This is to be done through a referendum so as to endure justice, peace and progress of this country.
“In other to achieve these, we will make sure the conference is truly representative of the populace. It will take into consideration all interests and it will not ignore any section of the polity,” the group said.
The eminent citizens present at the meeting however said avoidable disaster and anarchy will be the lot of the country should the President ignore the call for the convocation of the conference before the general election.
Among other members of the group present at the meeting were Olorogun Felix Ibru, Gen. Alani Akinrinade, Chief Phillip Asiodu, Chief (Mrs.) Bola Kuforiji-Olubi, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Prince Bola Ajibola, Prof. Pat Utomi, Mrs. Ganiat Fawehinmi and Mike Ozekhome.

N12.3m for National Youth Council congress missing

The where about of a total sum of N12.3million of the N15 million allegedly released to the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) for its oncoming congress is missing.
The Congress is schedule to take place in Ondo State on 20 to 24th of February this year and it was gathered that the State government released the money for the purpose of the event.
While speaking to journalists in Abuja, the Vice President (North Central) National Youth Council of Nigeria, Tijani Kabiru Mohammed said from the money released to the Council through the Chairman of Central Planning Committee, Shotade George, only N2.7m was made available by him.
He noted that all efforts to get explanation on the remaining sum had proved abortive as Mr. George refused to pick calls or respond to text messages from the Congress Planning Committee officials but George said no money was given to him.
The Vice Chairman had said the constitution of the Council empowers members of the Congress Planning Committee of the NYCN to go ahead with the congress without the presence of the Chairman.
"Everything we are doing falls into the confines of the constitution (of the organisation)."
He maintained that there were some of the executive members of the Council who don't want the congress to hold because they wanted to hold unto power.
"We have progressive and retrogressive element in every organisation, even PDP face the same problem."
"The state government (Ondo State) has released N15million for the congress but only N2.7 million had reached us so far which the remaining is still with the chairman."
He said the Chairman didn't come for the meeting because he didn't want to give account.
Mohammed vowed that the Council would invite external auditors to audit its account as part of its effort to combat corruption.
He however noted that the undelivered fund may not hinder the NYCN's congress as it expects funds from other sources once it finished up its paper work with the government.
No disbursement
When Dailytrust called Mr. George, he denied being in possession of such money, claiming the Ondo State government never released any sum.
"I want to appreciate your effort but if you have an issue with Ondo State government, you can go ask them.
"Apart from that, nobody disbursed any money to me and I'm not accountable to anybody."
He agreed that there was an internal problem in the Council and the Press had no reason to poke nose.
Mr. George also pointed out that those accusing him of embezzlement were not officials of the council.
"They are not representing the Youth Council."
He later dropped the call on our reporter when probed further.
Congress holds
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Council's Congress Planning Committee, Uzoh Ifeanyi said the Congress will take place as earlier planned.
Though, he revealed that the Council still had to finalise its plan with the Ministry of Youth, he was confident that the congress' date won't change.
"They (Ministry of Youth) want us to register our amended constitution with the CAC before they can give us the go ahead. That, we will do in the coming week."
Uzoh enjoined all aspirants to go ahead with their activities ahead of the elections.

Three North Korean Doctors Killed In Potiskum-BBC

By BBC
Three South Korean doctors have been killed in the north-eastern Nigerian state of Yobe, officials say.
Residents said they were killed during the night in the town of Potiskum. Two of them had their throats slit while the third was beheaded, they added.
Officials said the victims had been working at a government-run hospital.
No-one has said they were behind the attack, but it happened in an area where the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, has been active in recent years.
More than 600 people were believed to have been killed in 2012 by the group, which is fighting to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state in Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north.
'No guards'
Yobo state police commissioner Sanusi Rufai said it was nevertheless too early to know who was behind the attack, which happened either late on Saturday or before dawn on Sunday. Police have begun an investigation.
The victims were reportedly found inside their flat on Sunday morning, after people became worried that they were not answering the door.
An official at the General Hospital in Potiskum told the Associated Press that the victims were South Korean and had worked there.
He added that their block of flats had no security guards, and that they had routinely travelled through the town in taxis without a police escort.
However, several residents told AFP that the doctors were Chinese nationals who had been employed by the state ministry of health for about a year. Mr Rufai also said they were from China.
On Friday, nine polio vaccination workers - all said to have been women - were shot dead in northern Nigeria. Some were killed in Kano, others at a health centre in Hotoro, outside the city.
President Goodluck Jonathan condemned the killings, for which no group has claimed responsibility, and vowed that the campaign to eradicate polio would be carried through to a successful conclusion.

Although the family of the woman could not pay any deposit, the hospital management was said to have ordered that the woman be operated upon to save her life and her unborn children.
The hospital was said to have later demanded about N100,000 but no member of her family showed up, SO the woman and her set of twins were detained in the hospital until the medical bill could be paid.
The husband of the woman, Femi, who is a technician, was said to have opted for okada business to raise the money….To cut the story short sha, the state governor’s wife, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi, got to know of the detention, so she visited the hospital, foot the bill and secured the release of the woman and her babies.
