2 air passengers arrested with arms in Lagos

 by Chris Agabi, Lagos
Security officials at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria have apprehended two passengers for being in possession of arms at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
According to a statement from FAAN’s General Manager, Corporate Communications, Mr. Yakubu Dati, the arrests were made on Wednesday and Thursday.
It was gathered that one of the passenger, who flew into the country from Maryland enroute Atlanta Georgia, USA, arrived MMA about 4.00pm on Wednesday.
“The passenger claimed that the gun was brought in from the USA for his personal protection while in Nigeria. He claimed to have declared the gun to the airline before checking in his luggage at the airport. The pistol did not pose any threat to any passenger at the time of seizure. Aviation security personnel of the authority have continued to work hand in hand with other security agents to ensure the security of lives and property at airports nationwide,” the statement added.
FAAN said another passenger who checked in on an Aero Contractors flight from Lagos to Port Harcourt on Thursday was also apprehended by AVSEC officers at the MM2 terminal, for possessing firearms.
“The pistol was discovered in his checked –in luggage. The passenger said he bought the pistol from the USA for personal protection during his holiday in Aba, where he would spend his holiday”, the statement added.
The statement further stated that though the passenger tendered the receipt for the purchase of the gun, the arm was handed over to security agents for further investigation.
The statement said in another development, FAAN’s security personnel, apprehended two Hungarian citizens, Miss Szabone Balatoni Hajnalka and Miss Porge Szabina.
The two passengers, the statement said did not appear to have any genuine reason for being in the country, and were handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for further investigation.

No Ordinary Coach Can Do What Keshi Did – Kanu

EaglesFormer Super Eagles Captain Nwankwo  Kanu has said that coach Stephen Keshi should be left alone to fully re-build his team ahead of future international tournaments.
Kanu in Johannesburg on Monday said that Keshi had laid a solid foundation with the crop of young players that won the just-concluded Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
He said the coach had been in football for a long time as a player and now coach and had vast experience on how to manage a team.
“The big boss, of course he is a big boss. He makes his decision and one thing you have to know, he has been there.
“He captained the Nigerian team to win it, so I do not believe that anybody can still tell him what to do.
“Everybody have (has) to leave him alone. Whatever he did today, no ordinary coach especially, a local coach can do that.
“He made his team, he stand on them, he played his pattern, he stands on them, he talked to the boys as a father, he takes them to this highest level and they win the cup. What else do you expect of him?” Kanu who is fondly called Papillo asked.

Pope Benedict Resignation Announcement (FULL TEXT)

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday he would resign Feb. 28 because he is simply too old to carry on. Here is the text of his announcement, delivered to cardinals gathered for a ceremony to name three new saints.
"Dear Brothers,
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.
Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer."

Nigeria's Cardinal Arinze: the Next Pope?

By Fraser Nelson
Nigeria's Cardinal Arinze: the Next Pope?
The Pope's surprise resignation will put the world's attention on Nigeria's Cardinal Francis Arinze. Not so long ago, the candidates would all be Italians. Now, the odds on a Pope from the developing nations are quite srtong.
There is an old saying in the Vatican: young cardinals vote for old popes. This bodes will for the 80-year-old Cardinal Arinze, an Igbo Nigerian who spent 25 years in the Vatican. He was, once, the world's youngest bishop. He is quite conservative, as the last two Popes were, and was regarded as a candidate in the 2005 conclave. The liberal Cardinals will like the idea of a Pope from the developing world.
The new rules mean a new Pope needs the votes of two-thirds of the Cardinals, so one faction cannot impose its will over another. Since no one expected Benedict's resignation, it could well be that the Cardinals are not ready to come up with a long-term solution. Older popes are, historically, a form of compromise. Arinze himself can't vote, having turned 80. There are only ten African electors left.
However, it should be noted that Arinze retired a few years ago, hardly demonstrating an appetite for the far-greater demands of the papacy.
If a younger Pope is called for, there is another African option in the form of the younger Peter Turkson, a Ghanian. There are hints that he is Benedict's favourite candidate: not so long ago, the Pope said that having a African pontiff (for the first time in 1500 year) would "send a splendid signal to the world" about the universality of the church.
But is this what Benedict wants? He has appointed surprisingly few Africans to the electoral college.
In general, today's nominations reinforce the dominance of the West in the College of Cardinals. Only three of the 18 new electors come from the developing world — one Brazilian, one Indian, and one from China (Hong Kong). In that sense, the College of Cardinals will continue to be unrepresentative of Catholic demography, given that two-thirds of the 1.2 billion Catholics in the world today live in the global south, a share projected to rise to three-quarters by mid-century.
Here are probable candidates to replace the Pope:
  • Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria. Age 80.
  • Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana, Age 64. Appointed by Benedict four years ago to become president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.
  • Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Canada, Age 68
  • Archbishop Angelo Scola, an Italian philosopher. Aged 71.
  • Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga. A Honduran who was President of the Latin American Episcopal Conference. Age 70
  • Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, an Italian prelate. Aged 78

Keshi Reveals How His Wife Punishes Him If The Team Plays Bad

hi-res-160806767_display_image
My wife is my number one coach and critic. In my playing days, if I don’t play well anytime she was in the stadium, even if we won the match, I would convince her on what happened before she would give me food to eat.
So, to avoid her query, I played good football anytime she was in the stadium. She had a particular place she sits at the stadium and once I saw her, I would force myself to fine-tune my game. If I fail to play up to her expectation, I would not sleep that night because she would nag all the way for at least two days. So, my wife is the pillar to all I have achieved in life.
She has managed me very well and will continue to manage me. Even in my coaching career, she goes with me to any major tournament. She harassed me when Mali played against Angola during the 2010 Nations Cup and asked me what the heck we played. She knows little about the game and she has done well for the family too.
I got married before playing in Europe. I met my wife when I was with the New Nigerian Bank FC. Then she was 19 going to 20, while I was 20 going to 21 years. I was the captain of the team then and having her by my side has remained a blessing all along.
Keshi’s greatest Nigerian footballer
Thompson Usaiya is my greatest Nigerian player, but I won’t fail to mention the late Mudasiru Lawal and of course, ‘The Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, who we don’t really appreciate. Chukwu is like German Kaiser or Beckenbauer, the words of those legends are respected, but who is Chukwu in Nigeria? It’s a pity we don’t respect our own.
There are other great players in Nigeria like Adokie Amasiemaka, who would have destroyed Europe if he had played professional football abroad.
