Saying It As It Is By Abba Mahmood

The English say it is “calling spade a spade”. Here, one of the groups in Nigeria known for telling the truth and putting no colour to anything it says is the Gbagyi (Gwari). The Gbagyi do not have any false pretence. They say anything as it is.
That is why anytime people want to say the truth without mincing words they say in Hausa language, “Muyi ta Gwari – Gwari” (let us do it Gbagyi-Gbagyi style). Today I intend to say it as it is, no matter where ox is gored. This is what this column is known for, after all.
With regards to 2015, let us safely conclude that President Goodluck Jonathan is going to contest. The legality or otherwise as well as the moral and ethical dimensions of that will be sorted out later by the law courts. If there is anything that gave him away, it is the interview he had with Amanpour of CNN recently.
That interview was able to bring out Dr. Jonathan more than anything else. More than anyone else, the president is interested in continuing in office beyond 2015. He has made it clear by saying it as it is in body language.
There was sympathy for him in 2009/10 when the sick Yar’Adua was dying and the country was held to ransom because there was no proper communication to make him effectively take charge. All the governors and the National Assembly came to the rescue by using the Doctrine of Necessity to make him take charge and, ultimately, nature took its course and he became substantive president in May 2010 with the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua.
For the 2011 presidential election, the PDP governors had a meeting and unanimously agreed to support him for ONE term only. That decision was taken on Thursday, December 16, 2010, and the communique was read by Governor Shema of Katsina on behalf of his colleagues after they all had appended their signatures to that decision individually.
It is very clear that President Jonathan has jettisoned that agreement just as he threw out the zoning policy of his party in the course of the last election.
The problem he has now is that he has many things to contend with over his 2015 ambition. One, he was supported based on trust in 2011 and now he has to have something to show for staying for almost six years by 2015. Two, there are 18 PDP state governors who are in their second term now who would naturally want to move on. Their support was critical to his emergence in 2011 and, being a former governor himself, Jonathan knows that EK Clark is not as useful to him for 2015 as the governors that Clark is insulting now.
From various Supreme Court judgements too, such as Marwa vs Nyako and the celebrated case of Boni Haruna who inherited an election even before his principal was sworn in back in 1999 when Atiku was elevated to be the vice president to Obasanjo after winning the governorship of Adamawa, it is very clear that any stay in office of governor or president beyond EIGHT years is alien to the constitution. President Jonathan has to sort that out quickly with a competent court of law.
Due to the fact that from Yar’Adua to date every president and vice president has been a former state governor, every governor is seen as a potential president or vice president. That is why, collectively, these governors are very crucial to the whole equation.
There are a couple of governors who are presidential materials and everybody knows this. The PDP structure is skewed in their favour so that they are the teeth of the party. Obasanjo and Atiku committed that original sin that is now haunting the whole structure of the party. Every national officer of the party was either brought by a governor or the president and was adopted by “consensus” in the spirit of the party’s “family affair”.
President Jonathan’s main challenger during the last PDP primaries was former vice president Atiku Abubakar. Atiku wrongly came from a “northern” consensus platform. His speech at the convention dwelt on that “zoning” that was already jettisoned by the party. Atiku is still nursing presidential ambition but I cannot see where he will go in the current PDP. This is because I cannot see which state governor or even any national officer of the party that is behind him. This is just saying it as it is.
Dr. Jonathan’s main challenger in the presidential election was General Muhammadu Buhari. His party, the CPC, did not have a single councilor then because it was new. Some people in his party hierarchy also helped to mismanage the chances of the party to get at least a couple of state governors, which would have been a good starting point.
Even Al-Makura’s governorship victory in Nassarawa in 2011 was largely a personal one and not based on any party popularity or acceptance, since the CPC has only four state assembly members out of 24 in the Nassarawa House of Assembly. This is just saying it as it is.
Then, there is even the sorry case of the prisoners’ dilemma in the north. In game theory, the prisoners’ dilemma is that one is enjoying at the expense of others or one is losing because of another’s gain. Some people have been peddling the ridiculous falsehood that Buhari lost in 2011 because Shekarau and Ribadu did not withdraw from the race! Then, who stopped him from becoming victorious in 2003 when he contested with only Obasanjo? It does not necessarily mean that if Buhari alone contested against another person from the south, then, he would automatically win because he is from the north. Politics is more than that.
Even to rig, you have to have some level of acceptance. General Buhari has paid his dues; he should just rest honourably now. Buhari is an inspirational leader any day but he has allowed himself to be mismanaged by people he is not ready to do away with.
Buhari’s main asset is his integrity. And, if after telling the whole world in tears that 2011 was his last contest for the presidency, he tries to change his mind now at over 70 years of age, then, it is indeed unfortunate because that integrity will take a flight. That is just saying it as it is.
The ongoing merger talks among the various opposition parties is a good thing for Nigeria’s democracy. It will create a strong platform capable of challenging the PDP so that the democratic process will be more matured, deepened and widened.
But if that merger is based on the ambition of certain individuals, then, it will go nowhere. If some people or section of Nigeria continues to say “Nigeria sai wane!”, then, God will leave them with that wane! And everyone knows what that means. But, hey, this is just an ordinary citizen saying it as it is. God save Nigeria.

Black-Couple-Arguing1-378x371
Times without numbers men are advised to leave women alone for some cogent reasons, but for the sake of one thing or the other we tend to hold on. The truth is so many men that keep holding on for the wrong reason eventually get disappointed when some needs eventually cannot be met. This may not apply to you, but here are a few reasons why you should leave her alone.
Leave her alone if:
1. She pressures you about marrying her.
2. She wants a baby in order to”get closer to you.”
3. She thinks commitment in a relationship is outdated.
4. She uses s*x as a means of control.
5. Her parents promise you a position in the company.
6. She doesn’t know the meaning of “us.”
7. She drinks on a regular basis or takes illegal drugs.
8. She measures success by dollarsigns rather than happiness.
9. She has no interest in your opinion or feelings.
10. She thinks all responsibility should rest on your shoulders.
11. She wants to make love with you on the first date.
12. She considers her money”hers” and your money “hers.”
14. She can’t make a decision without “Mommy and Daddy.”
15. She hopes to mould you into a man just like her father.
16. She constantly talks about anex-love.
17. Her IQ is smaller than her shoe size.
18. She doesn’t believe in “Till death do us part.”

Cable Operator Accidentally Airs Soft Porn Channel Instead Of MTV, Viewers Fail To Notice

In a major broadcasting error, Polish cable TV network Vectra accidentally switched softcore porn channel HustlerBlue with the music channel MTV for an entire 24-hour period. Though Vectra issued an official apology to its viewers, the vast majority of them hadn’t even noticed there had been a mistake.
In the official apology, the company said that they took full responsibility for the “technical error” that had caused the two channels to switch places for an entire day. “We regret our unfortunate mistake that resulted in our viewers having to watch naked men and women grinding to instrumental background music on HustlerBlue instead of naked men and women grinding to instrumental background music on MTV.
We are aware that our viewers are the ones that suffered the most from this incident, and hope that none of them will sue us because it really wasn’t our fault, especially not Billy from night shift,” Vectra said in its statement.
A telephone poll established that the cable company did not have much cause for concern, as the majority of Vectra viewers said they hadn’t even noticed that the soft sounds of MTV had been replaced with the somewhat harder core sounds of HustlerBlue.
Warsaw Physics professor Andrey Laka said that he was busy grading papers when the programing error was in effect, and though he only took the occasional glimpse at his TV screen, did not notice anything out of the ordinary.
“Just by glancing at the TV every now and then I can tell you that the amount of nudity was about the same as always, so I can’t say that I really noticed anything strange. I didn’t hear the music because my TV was on mute, but visually speaking, everything appeared to be completely normal,“ Dr. Laka told the Global Edition.
Another participant in our poll, music critic Bronislaw Czartoryski, spent most of the day cleaning his apartment. He also claims to have been under the impression that he’d been listening to MTV the entire time.
“I wasn’t watching the TV that much because I was busy cleaning, but it was on pretty much all day. I do remember thinking to myself that they were playing much better music than they usually do, I think it was mostly some instrumental stuff.
Anyways, there were also way fewer ads. There were some moans and sighs every now and then, but I just remember thinking that it was Rihanna or something,” Mr. Czartoryski said.
The music critic added that he had been “pretty disappointed” when he heard the cable company’s official statement, as he’d “hoped for a minute there that MTV might have finally improved its music policy.”

6 in 10 Nigerians Agree That Nigeria Has Fared Better As A Nation

 By ileowo kikiowo
Abuja, Nigeria. February 8, 2013 – Latest weekly poll results released by NOI Polls Limited have revealed that about 6 in 10 Nigerians agree that the country has fared better as a united nation, instead of being separate. The results also indicate that 48 percent of Nigerians think the planned 100 year celebration of Nigeria in 2014 is justified. These were two key findings from the centenary polls done in the week of February 4^th 2013.

According to media reports, Tuesday February 5^th 2013 marked the flagging-off of Nigeria’s year-long Centenary celebration at the Banquet Hall of the State House by President Goodluck Jonathan. While delivering his address, the President expressed his appreciation to eminent Nigerians and corporate organisations who have actively participated towards making the launch of the Centenary celebration a success.
It was against this background that NOI Polls, Nigeria’s leading opinion polling organisation, sought to gauge the awareness of Nigerians regarding the country’s Centenary and their opinions on the planned celebrations. Respondents to the poll were asked five specific questions. The first question sought to establish awareness regarding Nigeria’s forthcoming Centenary. Respondents were asked: Are you aware that Nigeria would be 100 years as nation in 2014? The results indicate that almost 7 in 10 Nigerians (69%) said they were aware that Nigeria would be 100 years in 2014; while 31% of respondents stated that they were not aware.

Respondents who were aware that Nigeria would be 100 years in 2014 were further asked about their awareness of the planned celebration: Are you aware of the year-long centenary celebration to mark the amalgamation of Nigeria? of the 69% of respondents who were aware that Nigeria will be 100 in 2014, a further majority (68%) were aware of the planned celebration, while 32% were not aware.

The third question sought the opinions of Nigerians regarding the need for the planned centenary celebration. Respondents were asked: Do you agree or disagree that 100 years celebration of the amalgamation of Nigeria is justified? The results indicate that majority (48%) of the respondents agree that the celebration is justified, followed by 31% that disagree. Also, 11% of the respondents are neutral, while 5% each strongly agree and strongly disagree.

When responses from the third question were further analysed across geo-political zones, the analyses shows that the South-East zone has the greatest proportion of respondents (75%) that agree the centenary celebration is justified; while the North East has the largest percentage of respondents (62%) who disagree with the celebration. Generally, the results indicate that 53% of Nigerians are of the opinion that the centenary celebration is justified.

Next, respondents were asked the following question: Do you think Nigeria has achieved the vision of the founding fathers after its first 100 years? The overwhelming majority (72%) responded negatively, stating they did not think Nigeria has achieved the vision of its founding fathers in the first 100 years. Furthermore, 26% answered “Yes” to the question while 2% stated they did not know or refused to answer the question. This finding highlights earlier findings from the company’s 2012 independence poll, where 88% of the respondents thought that the current vision of the country is not the same as it was in 1960. Please visit www.noi-polls.com (http://noi-polls.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=49b0aad9cb04a7467834a9d88&id=fa477aa520&e=7a575ca66a) for results of  the  Independence Day Poll.

Finally, given the mixed opinions that have trailed the issue of Lord Lugard’s amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates to form one single nation called Nigeria; respondents were asked the following question: Do you agree with the opinion that Nigeria would have fared better if it had remained two separate protectorates?  Majority (61%) of the respondents answered “No”, indicating that they disagree that Nigeria would have fare better if the country had remained two separate protectorates. Also, 37% responded “Yes” to the question, while 2% said they do not know or refused to answer. The results indicate that at least 6 in 10 Nigerians (61%) are of the opinion that it was a right decision by Lord Lugard to amalgamate the Northern and Southern protectorates, and that Nigeria has fared better by remaining one nation.

Furthermore, when the data was cross-tabulated and the responses analysed across the geo-political zones, it is clearly observed that the only region that had a significantly different opinion regarding the amalgamation is the South-East zone, where majority (63%) of the respondents seemed to hold the view that Nigeria would have fared better if it had remained two separate protectorates.

In conclusion, the results of this current poll have clearly indicated that most Nigerians are aware that the country will mark 100 years of amalgamation in 2014, and they consider this worth celebrating. Also, despite the fact that most Nigerians (72%) do not think that Nigeria has achieved the vision of its founding fathers; yet the majority of those polled (61%) are still of the opinion that Nigeria has fared better as one united indivisible nation instead of remaining two separate protectorates.

Survey Methods
The opinion poll was conducted on February 5^th to 7th 2013. It involved telephone interviews of a random nationwide sample. 720 randomly selected phone-owning Nigerians aged 18 years and above, representing the six geopolitical zones in the country, were interviewed. With a sample of this size, we can say with 95% confidence that the results obtained are statistically precise - within a range of plus or minus 4%. NOI Polls Limited is Nigeria’s leading opinion polling and research organisation, which works in technical partnership with the Gallup Organisation (USA), to conduct periodic opinion polls and studies on various socio-economic and political issues in Nigeria. Ashley Madison Names Washington D.C. 'America's Least Faithful City'

Washington D.C. isn't only our nation's capital. For the second year in a row, it's also the capital of infidelity.
According to a press release from AshleyMadison.com -- a dating site for married people looking to cheat -- D.C. was recently named "America's Least Faithful City" for the second year in a row. The title was based on data collected by the infidelity website, which found that D.C. had the highest number of sign-ups per capita in 2012, boasting 34,157 new members. Two Texas cities -- Austin and Houston -- came in at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
Founder and CEO of Ashley Madison, Noel Biderman, explained why he was not surprised to see D.C. top the list yet again.
"With enormous public attention paid to political cheating scandals this year, including the Gen. Petraeus affair, there was no doubt that Washington residents would be influenced," he said in a press release. "Living in D.C., it's crucial to keep up appearances and therefore adultery has become a way of life for many of the city's most powerful residents."
This week is a big one for Ashley Madison, as the site claims that the day after Valentine's Day is one of their busiest days every year. In 2012, the site saw a 439 percent increase in membership signs-ups on February 15 (as compared to the typical number of daily sign-ups), with married women largely driving the spike.
Still, don't let these numbers fool you -- cheating is far from widespread in the United States. In a 2010 General Social Survey sponsored by the National Science Foundation, 19 percent of men said that they had been unfaithful at some point during their marriages, down from 21 percent in 1991. The number of women who reported having an affair, meanwhile, increased from 11 percent in 1991 to 14 percent in 2010.

Merger: CNPP blames Obi, Okorocha for APGA crisis

by Abbas Jimoh
The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has blamed the two governors of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Governors Peter Obi of Anambra State and Owelle Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, for the latest crisis rocking the party.
Secretary General of CNPP, Chief Willy Ezugwu, told reporters yesterday in Abuja that while there has been disagreements among stakeholders of the party over bid by Governor Okorocha to drag the party into the merger bid of opposition parties, Governor Obi has been accused of facilitating last Friday’s sack of Chief Victor Umeh as national chairman of APGA by an Enugu High Court.
Ezugwu said it was unfortunate that the power tussle in the party has been elevated to a point of ruthlessness which could lead to the disintegration of APGA if care is not taken.
He said, “There is nowhere in any party’s constitution that the governor takes decision by himself without recourse to the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), National Executive Committee (NEC) and leaders of the party. Obi has been doing this. He has created factions in APGA and is responsible for its infiltration and the leadership crisis currently rocking the party. I dare say he is doing this for the PDP and this is sad.”
On the merger move on behalf of the party by Governor Okorocha, Ezugwu said Okorocha was on his own as selfish interest was the underlining motive for his action.
