Santa Monica Shooting Reported Blocks Away From Santa Monica College, 1 Person Dead (UPDATES)

LOS ANGELES -- Multiple gunshot victims were reported in Santa Monica, Calif., early Tuesday morning.
The crime scene is just blocks away from Santa Monica College, where a gunman went on a shooting rampage on Friday.
Two men were transported to the hospital after police responded to a call about gunshots at around 8:20 a.m. on the 1500 block of Michigan Avenue, reports CBS Los Angeles.
The victims were transported to a local hospital to undergo surgery. One man died of his wounds, reports CBS Los Angeles.
Authorities say that the suspect allegedly approached the two victims in an alley and began firing. Police are searching for the suspect and a car, which may be a blue Infinity, notes the Los Angeles Times.
As of 9:30 a.m., the campus of Santa Monica College was not on lockdown, the college president's office told The Huffington Post. Final exams have concluded, and the campus is mostly quiet except for activity preparing for the school's graduation this evening.
The grounds had just re-opened to students on Monday.
Authorities identified Friday's gunman as 23-year-old John Zawahri. Zawahri, a former Santa Monica College student, began his deadly rampage at his childhood home on Yorkshire Avenue, where he killed his father and brother. He fatally shot three more people on the campus of Santa Monica College, where police engaged him in a gunfight. He later died of his wounds.

Rubio Urges Republican Senators Not To Endorse His Own Immigration Bill

    By Igor Volsky

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is urging his Republican colleagues to refrain from publicly endorsing a comprehensive immigration bill he helped write in hopes of bolstering its border security provisions and possibly delaying the path to citizenship for the nation’s 11.1 million undocumented immigrants.
According to the Huffington Post, Rubio urged Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) to keep silent about her support for the measure before the first-term lawmaker endorsed the legislation on Sunday during an appearance on Face the Nation, calling it a “thoughtful bipartisan solution to a tough problem.” In a separate editorial, Ayotte also wrote that she would “support strengthening the legislation’s border security measures even further.”
Rubio “has not been telling them to vote no,” a Senate Democratic aide told HuffPo, “He has been apparently holding people back from declaring support for the bill, while at the same time saying the bill needs changes in order to garner support. My understanding is he told Sen. Ayotte’s office to hold back, but she didn’t care.”
Rubio initially praised the senate bill for “the toughest enforcement measures in the history of the United States” but has since walked a delicate balance, telling conservatives that he will support amendments that will prevent immigrants from attaining permanent legal status until the border is secure, while assuring Hispanic media that the path to legalization will not be lengthened.
For instance, on June 4th, Rubio told conservative talker Hugh Hewitt that he wouldn’t vote for his own bill if more stringent border security amendments “don’t pass” the Senate and appeared to support a measure crafted by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) that would require the Secretary of Homeland Security and the Comptroller General to, among other requirements, certify that the government can monitor and control “every segment of the Southern border” before any immigrants in provisional status can file for lawful permanent residence. Under the senate bill, immigrants can apply for lawful status after the secretary submits border security and a fencing strategies to Congress and insures that both are “substantially deployed and substantially operational.”
Five days after appearing on Hewitt, Rubio informed Univision that “Nobody is talking aboutpreventing the legalization.” “The legalization is going to happen,” Rubio said. “That means the following will happen: First comes the legalization. Then come the measures to secure the border. And then comes the process of permanent residence.”

Amaechi’s Kinsmen Vow To Resist Plot To Remove Him From Office

Rotimi-AmaechEmbattled Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi yesterday received the support of his kinsmen – the Ikwerre ethnic nationality, who insisted that he must be allowed to complete his second tenure despite mounting intrigues and plots to oust him from office.
The Ogbakor Ikwerre Cultural Organization Worldwide, the Ikwerre Development Association, the Ikwerre Youth Movement and the Ikwerre Women Forum came to this unanimous decision during their meeting in Port Harcourt on Monday.
President General of Ogbkor Ikwerre, Professor Austine Onyeozu in his opening speech insisted that “the people of Ikwerre ethnic Nationality will not fold their arms and allow Amaechi to be humiliated and pulled down by those opposed to his style of governance.”
“If you have any problem with Amaechi, take him to court; there is no problem with that. Today, they are calling Amaechi a bad man so that they can bring him down,” he said.
Toeing a similar line, member representing Ikwerre/Emohua federal constituency in the House of Representatives Andrew Uchendu, said the people of Ikwerre are concerned over the unwarranted attacks on the person of Amaechi and wondered what he did to merit such attacks, declaring that Ikwerre people will stand by the governor “in this trying time.”

What's Really In Those Squeezable Yogurt Tubes For Kids? (INFOGRAPHIC)

Done right, a bowl of yogurt (and the right toppings) can be the picture of a health-promoting breakfast. But somewhere between fruit on the bottom and fruit on the side came the squeezable yogurt in a tube, specifically marketed toward kids.
While we can all applaud a parent's effort to provide youngsters with a protein-rich breakfast or snack, these travel-ready yogurts conceal some less-than-desired ingredients thanks to the health halo surrounding yogurt in general.
Yogurt certainly can be healthful. Nutrition experts recommend picking a variety with at least some fat to help you feel full, and switching to Greek-style yogurt for theadditional protein. The fruit-flavored kinds can be loaded with added sugars, though, to the point that they should be considered a treat.
And while the calcium in yogurt is a plus, keep in mind some youngsters are sensitive to dairy, and would be better served with eggs or a high-fiber cereal with dairy-free milk.
Here's what's really inside those tubes:

Man Says He Had Sex with Unconscious Neighbor 'to Save Her Life'

Man Says He Had Sex with Unconscious Neighbor 'to Save Her Life'
U.S. - Police in Utah say a St. George man charged with raping his unconscious neighbor claimed he put his penis inside her to "save her life."
"He said he did place it inside of her to try and get her temperature up," reads the probable cause statement filed against 50-year-old Rodger William Kelly.
When officers arrived at the victim's house on May 19th, they reportedly found Kelly inside the residence performing CPR.
Kelly told the cops he had spotted woman lying unconscious outside her apartment and proceeded to bring her inside. He then changed her clothes and placed her on the bed.
Kelly says he then held the woman and "attempted intercourse to warm her."
It is unclear who phoned in the report of an unconscious person that prompted police to visit the residence.
After coming to, the woman told police she believed she had been raped after finding bruising on her upper thighs.
According to Kelly, he and the victim had slept together before, but the woman had since informed him that she was no longer interested in having sex with him.
Kelly was arrested Friday and booked into Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility on a charge of first-degree rape. His bail was set at $25,000.

World Exclusive: Evidence of GMO Harm in Pig Study

A groundbreaking new study [1] shows that pigs were harmed by the consumption of feed containing genetically modified (GM) crops.
Press release from Sustainable Pulse (sustainablepulse.com) and GMWatch (gmwatch.org)
GM-fed females had on average a 25% heavier uterus than non-GM-fed females, a possible indicator of disease that requires further investigation. Also, the level of severe inflammation in stomachs was markedly higher in pigs fed on the GM diet. The research results were striking and statistically significant.
Lead researcher Dr Judy Carman, adjunct associate professor at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia,[2] said: “Our findings are noteworthy for several reasons. First, we found these results in real on-farm conditions, not in a laboratory, but with the added benefit of strict scientific controls that are not normally present on farms.
Find all the background on this study and on Dr. Judy Carman here:www.gmojudycarman.org
“Second, we used pigs. Pigs with these health problems end up in our food supply. We eat them.
“Third, pigs have a similar digestive system to people, so we need to investigate if people are also getting digestive problems from eating GM crops.
“Fourth, we found these adverse effects when we fed the animals a mixture of crops containing three GM genes and the GM proteins that these genes produce. Yet no food regulator anywhere in the world requires a safety assessment for the possible toxic effects of mixtures. Regulators simply assume that they can’t happen.
“Our results provide clear evidence that regulators need to safety assess GM crops containing mixtures of GM genes, regardless of whether those genes occur in the one GM plant or in a mixture of GM plants eaten in the same meal, even if regulators have already assessed GM plants containing single GM genes in the mixture.”
The new study lends scientific credibility to anecdotal evidence from farmers and veterinarians, who have for some years reported reproductive and digestive problems in pigs fed on a diet containing GM soy and corn.[3]
Iowa-based farmer and crop and livestock advisor Howard Vlieger, one of the coordinators of the study, said: “For as long as GM crops have been in the feed supply, we have seen increasing digestive and reproductive problems in animals. Now it is scientifically documented.
“In my experience, farmers have found increased production costs and escalating antibiotic use when feeding GM crops. In some operations, the livestock death loss is high, and there are unexplained problems including spontaneous abortions, deformities of new-born animals, and an overall listlessness and lack of contentment in the animals.
“In some cases, animals eating GM crops are very aggressive. This is not surprising, given the scale of stomach irritation and inflammation now documented. I have seen no financial benefit to farmers who feed GM crops to their animals.”
Gill Rowlands, a farmer based in Pembrokeshire, Wales who is also a member of the campaign group GM-Free Cymru, said: “This is an animal welfare issue. Responsible farmers and consumers alike do not want animals to suffer. We call for the rapid phase-out of all GMOs from animal feed supplies.”
Claire Robinson of the campaign group GMWatch said: “Several UK supermarkets recently abandoned their GM-free animal feed policies, citing lack of availability of non-GM feed. We call on the public to visit the new citizens’ action website gmoaction.org, where they can quickly and easily send an email to the supermarkets asking them to ensure their suppliers secure certified GM-free animal feed. This will mean placing advance orders for GM-free soy from countries like Brazil.”
      Study details
The research was conducted by collaborating investigators from two continents and published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Organic Systems. The feeding study lasted more than five months, the normal commercial lifespan for a pig, and was conducted in the US. The pigs were slaughtered at the usual slaughter age of over 5 months, after eating the diets for their entire commercial lifespan.
168 newly-weaned pigs in a commercial piggery were fed either a typical diet incorporating GM soy and corn, or else (in the control group) an equivalent non-GM diet. The pigs were reared under identical housing and feeding conditions. They were slaughtered over 5 months later, at the usual slaughter age, after eating the diets for their entire commercial lifespan. They were then autopsied by qualified veterinarians who worked “blind” – they were not informed which pigs were fed on the GM diet and which were from the control group.
The GMO feed mix was a commonly used mix. The GM and non-GM diets contained the same amount of soy and corn, except that the GM diet contained a mixture of three GM genes and their protein products, while the control (non-GM) diet had equivalent non-GM ingredients. Of the three GM proteins in the GM diet, one made a crop resistant to being sprayed with the herbicide Roundup, while two were insecticides.

Employment Non-Discrimination Act 2013: The 'T' In LGBT Protections (INFOGRAPHIC)

When Congress last voted on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) in 2007, the bill would have prevented employers from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation but not gender identity or expression. House Democrats
removed transgender protections from the legislation, claiming they wouldn't have enough votes to pass an inclusive ENDA.

"There is more resistance to protection for people who are transgender than for people who are gay, lesbian and bisexual," Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) said in a statement at the time. "This is not a good fact, but ignoring bad facts is a bad way to get legislation passed."
The House did pass the bill, after quarreling over the non-inclusive language and repeatedly postponing a vote, but it died in the Senate. It was the seventh time ENDA had been introduced since 1994 when the first, non-inclusive version emerged. In 2009 and 2011, versions of the bill that did include gender identity language were introduced, but they languished in committee both times.
This year ENDA was reintroduced again — an inclusive version that would prohibit workplace discrimination based on gender identity, gender expression or sexual orientation — and it must be passed by the Senate and the House before President Obama can sign it into law.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Monday that he plans to take up ENDA "soon" and told reporters last month about a personal reason he supports a ban on workplace discrimination.
"My niece is a lesbian," he said. "She's a school teacher. Her employment shouldn't be affected with that. We should have a law that says that, not just the good graces of wherever you work."

      1. Defining Transgenderism
The root of the word "transgender" comes from the Latin word "trans," meaning "across." A trans-Atlantic flight goes across the Atlantic Ocean; a transnational issue affects people all across the country; and so on. "Transgender" literally means "across gender." "Transgender" is defined today as an umbrella term with many different identities existing under it.
