BREAKING NEWS: Shekau appears in new video, says ‘I am alive’

by Hamza Idris, Maiduguri
Leader of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunnah Lidda’awati Wal Jihad, also known as Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, today said the Nigerian Military should bury itself in shame because he is alive.
Shekau also claimed responsibility of Tuesday, 17th September, 2013 attacks in Benisheik, Borno State where over 160 people were either shot dead or slaughtered and hundreds of houses burnt.
The then Joint Task Force (JTF) spokesman in Borno State, Lt Col Sagir Musa, had issued a statement on 19th August, 2013 to the effect that “Intelligence report available to the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Restore Order revealed that Abubakar Shekau, the most dreaded and wanted terrorists leader may have died. He died of gunshots wounds received in an encounter with the JTF in one of their camps in Sambisa Forest on 30th June, 2013.
“Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide-a border community in Cameroon for treatment from which he never recovered,” the JTF statement said.
But in the latest video, Shekau who appeared in military camouflage uniform, seated and surrounded by hooded insurgents said “Here I am, alive, hale and hearty. Sagir Musa should bury himself in shame, President Jonathan (of Nigeria) should bury himself in shame, President Obama (of United States of America) should bury himself in shame, and President Francois Hollande (of France) should bury himself in shame, Queen Elizabeth
(of England) should bury herself in shame,” he said.
According to Shekau, “They said I am dead, but here I am. The world should know that I am alive and will only die at the appointed time. Everybody should be judged according to the dictates of his conscience. What I am doing is written in the Holy Qur’an and the Hadith and I will not stop. I challenge all the clerics of the world to question my deeds. Those
underrating my capacity should have a re-think. I will never allow democracy to thrive.
“The concept of Government of the people by the people for the people will never be possible and will never exist. Democracy shall be replaced only by the government of Allah, from Allah and for Allah,” he said.
He said the Nigerian military will never subdue his group. “Nigerian soldiers are late. After killing many of them in Monguno and Benisheik, we have snatched their armoured carriers and Hilux van and then hoisted Islamic flags on them. We now move freely with them,” he said.

DON’T RUN, JONATHAN, DON’T…: His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie ON 2015

THE Archbishop emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to jettison the idea (if any) of running for a second term in office in 2015.
In an exclusive interview with The Guardian, Okogie said “the handwriting on the wall,” does not favour it, even as the election date is two years away.
Making direct reference to the alleged “third-term bid” of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Archbishop, who… decried flattery and sycophancy ‘in high places,’ stressed the need to keep political agreement, if any.
According to Okogie, by 20015, the incumbent President would have served the country in that capacity for, at least, six years, the number of service years, which, he said, is enough for modest contribution to national development.
“If I were Jonathan, I will not try it (running for a second term), because the writing on the wall does not favour it. We have not even got to 2015, (yet) there is so much sycophancy and flattery. It is like telling Okogie now to go into politics: ‘come, you are the kind of person we want;’ you think I’m stupid?”
He continued: “Jonathan will be there for almost six years; there was a time, he was Vice, and now President for four years. What is he looking for again? It is just like comparing it with Obasanjo; what was Obasanjo looking for in third term?
“You know what happened then. Apart from the story that Jonathan made an agreement that he would do just one term, if it is true, do you think those who were there when he said ‘just one term’ are stupid.”
The Bishop Emeritus also expressed dissatisfaction with the manner the Nigerian elite go about the business of politics, describing it in the words of late musician, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, as “chop I chop.” He also condemned corruption and the killings in Nigeria.
“And why are so many people running into politics? 2015 is two years away; see how they are killing themselves. Who even knows who will get to 2015? What do you think they are looking for, money? Nothing else. They are not patriotic; they are not. All our political leaders, how many of them can beat their chests to say they are patriotic. It is just gimmick and pancake that they are doing.”

Ribadu lambasts Okiro, describes ex-IGP as corrupt, “shameless liar’

Former EFCC boss says Okiro is not only corrupt, but a shameless liar.
The pioneer chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Nuhu Ribadu, has described a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mike Okiro, as a “shameless liar,” for denying that a former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, helped him to secure his appointment as the nation’s number one cop.
Mr. Ribadu, in a statement by his media aide, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, argued that “If Okiro is now denying this in public, there is no way he can deny this open secret to a number of people including an influential governor from the North-Central then, and a couple of other people who helped facilitate his selection by Ibori.”
He said it was the same “shameless method of desperate lobbying” that the former IGP, whom he described as “a chronic political jobber and sycophant of the first order”, used in securing appointments as Chief Security Officer to the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and later as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, PSC.
The former EFCC boss, a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, had told a London court that Mr. Ibori was instrumental to Mr. Okiro’s appointment as IGP, a claim Mr. Okiro debunked, accusing the former EFCC boss of falsehood.
Mr. Ribadu said his attention was “drawn to the shameless lies a former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro recklessly spewed to the media yesterday.
“The cause of Mr. Okiro’s anger, the statement, in a London court, by Mallam Nuhu Ribadu that James Ibori was instrumental to his emergence as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) needs no further equivocation as it was an open secret to everybody in the government circle then.”
On the allegation that he (Ribadu) wanted to be the IGP, Mr. Ribadu, said it was a proof that Mr. Okiro was a perennial peddler of falsehood.
According to the statement, the former EFCC chairman’s focus then, was consolidating on his efforts at the Commission, especially at a time he was working on high-profile cases, including that of Mr. Ibori.
It said, “The assertion by Okiro that Ribadu wanted to be the IGP further underlines the former IGP as a perennial peddler of falsehood. The truth is Nuhu Ribadu’s focus then was consolidating on his modest efforts at the EFCC, especially at a time when he was working on high-profile cases, including that of Okiro’s godfather, James Ibori.
“We therefore challenge Okiro to name those people he called Ribadu’s friends that narrated the fictitious story of Ribadu’s interest in becoming the IGP to him,” he said.
According to the statement, Mr. Ribadu regretted that the former IGP, attempted to rewrite the well-known and widely documented assassination attempts on him (Ribadu), saying he (Okiro) was now trying to paint himself in another colour after all the scheming he orchestrated.
“The highest distortion in Okiro’s statement, however, is his attempt to rewrite the well-known and widely documented assassination attempts on the former EFCC chairman, and Okiro’s hands in it all. It is ridiculous that Okiro is now desperately trying to paint himself in another colour after all the schemings he orchestrated.
“It beats our imagination that Okiro would want a Nuhu Ribadu he was fighting to destroy to report those incidences to him. It would have been a case of having a culprit to be a judge in his own case.
“At the time, the trio of Michael Aondoakaa, the former Attorney General of the Federation, Okiro and Mrs. Farida Waziri, the former EFCC chairman, had created a hell out of the world for Ribadu.
“The only sensible thing to do was to avoid these characters and seek solace somewhere else. This notwithstanding, it is a blatant lie that Okiro telephoned Ribadu “several times” but that he did not answer his calls.
“What Ribadu and other Nigerians easily recall was an elated Okiro rushing to address the press to deny something he knew nothing about. The bullet-riddled car Ribadu drove during that unfortunate life threatening incident is still there, if Okiro or any other person would want a further proof.”
On the issue of the withdrawal of Mr. Ribadu’s personal security, the statement said, “If Okiro is suffering from selective amnesia, let him be reminded that that was exactly what he did.
“He also redeployed Ibrahim Lamorde out of the EFCC to Bauchi State Police Command as Area Commander in Ningi. He did the same thing to other top EFCC operatives that Nigeria spent a fortune to train as investigators. One of them suspected to be too close to Mr. Ribadu was even locked up for months,” the statement added.
Mr. Ribadu reminded Mr. Okiro that he (Okiro) was dancing on the naked in the gallery because of his corruption credentials.
“As for Okiro’s corruption credentials, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu would like to alert the retired IGP that he is dancing naked in the gallery as his nasty record is something known to many.
“A man who clearly reeks of corruption, is Okiro denying that he is corrupt when we all know he cannot account for the source of the wealth he used in building a shopping mall in Jabi, a hotel with casino in Lugbe and a private school, all in Abuja? This is not to mention his housing estates in Lagos and Port Harcourt, while he was still serving in the police.
“If a public servant, one tasked with the responsibility of protecting the lives of Nigerians and instilling discipline in the police, managed to amass such wealth, what gut does he have to talk of corruption?
“It is a national tragedy that a man of such flawed character has now been appointed to head an important institution like the Police Service Commission. May God rescue Nigeria!”

What to Do When Stopped By The Nigeria Police

It could happen to you.
Where are you coming from?
Where are you going to?
Where do you live?
Where do you work?
Do you have an identity card?
These are very simple questions, which can be easily answered by almost everyone. But when a police officer is involved, it can cause a lot of problems both for the officer and YOU. Most of the time, there is a reason for the officer to question you – even if it may not seem so at the time.
The officer may be investigating a complaint in the neighbourhood, or following up on a radio call concerning a crime committed in the area.
For one reason or another, you may be the individual the police suspect. You may have knowledge that will help in the investigation, or the officer may think that you are experiencing some kind of trouble.
Some times the manner in which the police question you may seem as if the officer is not respecting YOUR RIGHTS. Sometimes you may overreact to the questions and create a more serious situation. We will attempt to explain your rights. What to remember, and what to expect when an officer starts asking you a lot of questions… it could save you from answering a lot more unnecessary questions.

THE POLICE IN YOUR CAR

If you are driving a vehicle, the police can ask you to stop at any time. The best thing to do in this situation is to park and follow the directions of the officer. You will probably be asked to produce your driver’s license and particulars of the vehicle. This you must do, if asked. If you are stopped at night, turn on your interior light and show the officer that nothing is wrong. It is best to do nothing, which may give reason to search further. Having your light on and keeping your hand on the steering wheel will usually put the officer’s mind at ease.
Chances are that the officer might ask you to go if you have all your papers. The officer might say that you have violated traffic rules, if your papers are not correct or ask you to come out of your car for a search, if he is on Stop and Search duty. Remember that he or she is operating within the law in all these activities. Of course, you may explain at any point in this encounter, but you should limit your comments. Be careful how to make your points. A simple traffic violation may start costing you a fortune in fines for other violations. If you think that you have not violated any traffic rules, then carry your protest to the Police Public Complaints Bureau nearest to you.

IF YOU ARE STOPPED BY THE POLICE ON THE STREET

Most of the problems you may encounter with the police can be avoided. Remember, they think they have reason (probable cause) to stop you and ask questions. At this time, you should stop, collect your thoughts and remain calm. Whether or not you are arrested, may just depend on how calm and prepared you are at this time. There are many factors that the police may take into consideration when observing you. Every situation is different and the officer may consider the following factors,
 When you are running and a crime has been reported in the Area
 If you are hanging around with people under police investigation
 You are in an area where crime has just been reported
 You are in an area which the police believe to be abandoned or unoccupied, or a blackspot.
 You are acting in a manner, which appears to be suspicious
 The police believe you are in possession of stolen property.
 Someone else has identified you to the police.
 When you use derogatory or offensive language… You may be saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
While these things are taken into consideration when questioning you, the police MUST STILL RESPECT YOUR RIGHTS NOT TO ANSWER QUESTIONS THAT SOUND ACCUSATORY
 If the police have stopped you, they believe there is a reason to do so.
 It is best to be calm and identity yourself
 In many a situation, you can talk your way into arrest or detention as well as talk yourself out of trouble. By yelling, threatening or swearing at an officer, the BEST you can do is get yourself Arrested… and who needs that.

Ex-PDP governors, ministers back Jonathan for 2015 presidential election

The participants also want the crisis in PDP resolved.
Some former governors and governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Friday, kicked against plots to stop President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2015 presidential election, saying it would be against natural justice to deny him that constitutional right.
The governors and governorship candidates, under the aegis of G13 Candidates/Former PDP Governors Forum, also said after their meeting in Abuja that Mr. Jonathan should not be blamed for the mistakes and failure of the previous federal regimes before him.
The convener of the forum is the PDP governorship candidate in the 2012 election in Edo State, Charles Arhiavbere, a retired major general. Other members of the forum are former governor of Adamawa State, Boni Haruna; former governor of Zamfara State, Umar Shinkafi; former Education Minister, Dauda Birmah; former Minister of Sports, Damishi Sango; former Sports Minister, Abdulminu Aminu; former deputy governor of Ogun State, Salimot Badru; and governorship candidate of PDP in Ondo State, Olusola Oke.
John Dongi and Fidelis Seri are also members of the group.
According to Mr. Arhivbere, who spoke to journalists after the meeting of the forum, “The constitution provides for eight years for every office and I believe that going by natural justice, if there is a tenant in a house and it is going for sale the first opportunity of refusal should go to the occupant.
“And I believe that based on the midterm report of president, we believe that he should be given a second term in office to finish his project. President Jonathan has the right. It has not been published anywhere that he signed an agreement that he signed an agreement to run for one term. He should be given support and peaceful environment to implement his projects to completion.”
He said the forum was in support of Mr. Jonathan to seek re-election because of the achievements he had recorded in the last two years.
“The achievements recorded within the space of two years in office are highly commendable and the need to effortlessly support Mr. President to continue the good work through national consensus becomes imperative,” he said.
“To this end, we salute Mr. President for the resolute leadership demonstrated in the face of adversity to put Nigeria on the part of greatness. Who else, if not Jonathan Goodluck Ebele Jonathan?
“Once again, the group is ready to support Mr. President uncommon Transformation Agenda through the unveiling of a pet project to this effect. Goodluck to Goodluck is possible come 2015, that is to say Goodluck must handover to Goodluck.”
It asked all PDP members to embrace peace and return to the mainstream of the party under the leadership of Bamanga Tukur.
The former governorship candidate said that the forum had studied the raging crisis and concluded that it was a family affair, which must be resolved accordingly.
He said, “We studied the political impasse, horse trading and war of attrition and belligerence in recent times within and outside the context of our great party, PDP, the intra party conflict classified as family affair must be resolved within the party conflict resolution mechanism of the PDP Round Table Dialogue Initiative, put in place for the reconciliation and all well meaning PDP members should embrace peace and avail themselves of the opportunity given to return back to the mainstream under the leadership of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur as one indivisible PDP.”

EXCLUSIVE: Obasanjo’s sister owns Apo building where squatters were killed

and

Building where killings took place
The unfinished building where security forces killed at least seven squatters Friday, September 20, in the Apo neighbourhood of Abuja, belongs to Mrs. Adunni Oluwole Salisu, believed to be the sister to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, a PREMIUM TIMES investigation has revealed.
Documents from the Abuja Geographical Information Systems (AGIS) shows that the property, located at No. 8 Bamanga Tukur Street, Gudu District, near the Gudu cemetery, belongs to Mrs. Salisu.
Ownership details of property OG247326, point unmistakably to Mrs. Salisu’s land rights, but neither her, nor the former president, could be reached for comment; although authoritative family sources confirmed the ownership and the relationship.
The Gudu killings have pitched the Nigerian human rights community against anti-terrorist campaigners in a bitter debate about the threshold of caution that security forces on anti-terror missions ought to uphold where the insurgency is generally armed, and have demonstrated maximum capability for ruthless murder and violence.
Soldiers and SSS officials, spurred by intelligence reports that a sleeper cell of  Boko Haram insurgents, embedded in the Gudu neighbourhood, were about to strike again in Abuja, pre-emtorily stormed the building inhabited by squatters, mostly tricycles drivers, petty traders and artisans, in the early hours of Friday, killing at least seven and leaving several injured.
A spokesman for the tricycle association angrily lambasted security officials on  Channels TV, in an interview Monday, claiming that “because two or three Boko Haram people were in the building offers no excuse to kill innocent people.”
Security forces have been in anxious alert after the Boko Haram insurgents scored a string of deadly success in missions that targeted This Day newspaper office, the United Nations office, the Force Headquarters of the Nigeria Police, and the Anti-Robbery Squad headquarters of the Police-  all in Abuja. The sect has also visited punishing attacks on neighbourhood churches killing scores of worshipers.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered, within intelligence sources, Tuesday, that a mood of panic alert in the security community was what precipitated the Apo killings also thought to be “quite frankly an operational failure,” underscoring, top operatives disclosed to PREMIUM TIMES, “the imperative for deeper and specialized human rights training for agents on anti-insurgency mission.”
Residents claim a representative of the owner of the house had given the squatters a week notice to vacate the property.
The squatters were killed before the expiration of the notice. Most of the dead and wounded were shot in the back, execution style.
It is not known yet whether Mr. Obasanjo played any role in that tragic eviction operation.
Meanwhile, multiple security sources have told this paper that the SSS had released most of the squatters arrested at the building after it was unable to link them to any terrorist activities.
News of the release of the squatters came just as the Nigerian Senate, the Police and the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, promised to investigate the killings.
Chairman of the NHRC, Chidi Odinkalu, told PREMIUM TIMES it was essential to investigate and verify the death of the squatters.
“The facts of this matter should be dispassionately verified,” Mr. Odinkalu said. “That is an obligation everybody must take seriously.”
