 Amos Dunia in Abuja---Moves by Governor Adams Oshiomhole to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party is being seriously resisted by governors of the party and the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih.
PER SECOND NEWS gathered that the Comrade governor has become so uncomfortable with the leadership style of his party at the national level and the way some of them go about pilfering resources belonging to states under the control of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Oshiomhole, whose profile is perceived to be waning owing to the drop in the valve to carry out people oriented projects, is alleged to be particularly piqued with the handling of over N1billion contract he awarded to one of the prominent leaders of the party and a former governor of one of the richest states in the South-west geo-political zone.
The APC leader is believed to have failed to execute the contract after collecting payment for the job which is expected to be one of the major projects of the Oshiomhole-led administration in the state.
The Comrade Governor is also believed to be having sleepless night over recent developments within the APC in the state that led to the defection of some prominent members of his administration and party defected to the PDP in the state.
PDP governors, it was gathered are resisting the plan to get Oshiomhole defect to the party on the ground that his acceptance into the party would create more crisis than attract any positive impact for the party.
For instance, the PDP governors are of the view that the coming of Oshiomhole would create a major disequilibrium in the structures of the party in the state as he would want to dominate the affairs of the party in the state which would not be in the interest of members particularly leaders of the party that have sustained the PDP all these years with Oshiomhole as governor.
Specifically, the Chairman of the BoT of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih was particularly said to have taken aback on hearing that that Oshiomhole is interested in defecting to the party.
Anenih was quoted as having said: “What does he want to come and do in our party having destroyed the APC in the Edo state. Is he planning to come and destroy the party we worked so hard to build?
But Oshiomhole is not giving up the idea as he has approached the President of the Senate to assist him talk to the PDP governors to accept his defection proposal, assuring that he means well in his resolve to join the ruling party.

In his reaction, Governor Oshiomhole described the insinuations of his plan to defect to the PDP as ridiculous claims and utter falsehood.
Oshionhole, who spoke to PER SECOND NEWS through his Special Advier on Media, Prince Kassim Afegbua explained that there cannot be any Governor in the country who wishes to join the PDP and it would refuse.
Afegbua said: “A PDP that has shown such undiluted obsession for power and power alone. A PDP that has shown a remarkable capacity for arm twisting and political capturing. The Comrade Governor has not and will not contemplate joining the PDP because there is no basis for that.
“At the initial stage, Dr. Ogbemudia led a delegation of PDP chieftains to beg Oshiomhole to join their party, but the Comrade Governor declined. Is it now he will be interested? That is utter rubbish.
“At any rate because they are so daft they are not aware of constitutional provisions which guarantee anyone to associate and assemble with any organisation be it political party or otherwise. Political parties are like markets; free entry, free exit. Nobody can prevent any Nigerian from joining a Party. That is where they got it wrong.
“If comrade Governor chooses to join PPD today, even President Jonathan will role out drums to welcome him. A Comrade Governor whose popularity in the country is legendary, formidable and quintessential. This is why we are trying to prevail on him to contest for president in 2015. Who knows, he may bow to our pressure,” Afegbua said.
On alleged contracts awarded to former governor of Lagos State, Ahmed Bola Tinubu by Governor Oshiomhole, Afegbua said he is aware that contracts were given to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, adding that there are no abandoned projects in Edo State.
According to him: “All projects are either completed or ongoing. Assuming Bola Tinubu got contract through due process, how is that a sin. There is no law that forbids him from getting patronage anywhere in the country provided he does the job.

What The Hell Is Jonathan’s Presidency For?

President Obama was speaking at an event last April to mark an anniversary in America. Then he told a story about former American President Lyndon Johnson.
Lyndon Johnson was President John Kennedy’s vice before the latter was
assassinated in 1963. Then after Johnson took over as president, he wanted to speak to Congress and persuade them to pass a major civil rights bill. However, his advisors warned him that it would be risky and tried to discourage him. But he told them, “Well, what the hell’s the presidency for?”
Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan shares one similarity with Lyndon Johnson. Like Johnson, he was the vice president when the president died, and he was sworn in to take over.
Jonathan’s rise to the presidency evoked a lot of admiration and optimism among ordinary Nigerians because of the dramatic manner in which he became the president. He seemed to have risen to the top from nowhere, and he had an innocent personality. However, his performance has been so outrageously unremarkable since he took charge four years ago, and a lot of those Nigerians who felt admiration and optimism at the time are now utterly disappointed. Like Gary Younge’s question about Obama in a recent article, the question right now is, what the hell is Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency for?
To be fair, the truth is that Jonathan inherited most of the problems gripping the country today. Corruption was rife before he came on board. The standard of living was deplorable for most Nigerians. Infrastructure was deficient, and a lot of systems (e.g. education) were in a state of crap already. The problem is that he has done substantially little to deal with these problems and, in some cases, has even perpetuated them.
For instance, he officially pardoned a corrupt ex-governor and thereby put him out of jail despite strong disapproval from civil societies. A number of ministers in Jonathan’s cabinet have also been indicted for corruption. But despite the telling evidence against them, he either didn’t sack them or he didn’t make sure they were prosecuted. At one time the Central Bank governor also cried out that billions of petrodollars had been stolen by some people in government. But instead of ensuring that the governor’s claims were properly investigated, he alienated the man and effectively fired him. He even said in one interview that corruption is not the same as stealing. He has hardly
done anything to fight corruption in this country where corruption is so prevalent.
Yet, if there’s anyone who should be doing more to make life better for the Nigerian people, it is Goodluck Jonathan. Why, because he is not one of the political elite who have been calling the shots in this country for decades. He was indigent as a boy and grew up under poor circumstances. He knows what it is like to walk many miles to school barefooted, carrying your books on your head. He experienced lack and deprivation. And ordinarily, one would expect that a person with such humble history would be more public spirited and passionate about turning things around for the people of his country. Disappointingly,
Jonathan has demonstrated none of that. The question is: what the hell is his presidency for?

Again, stalemate in National Conference over Nigeria’s revenue formula

Based on the disagreement on Thursday, the Confab was forced to adjourn about one hour ahead of its 3.30 p.m. closing time.
For the second consecutive day, there was a stalemate at the National Conference as delegates disagreed on the revenue derivation formula.
On Thursday, the Conference Chairman, Idris Kutigi, announced that he would meet with the 50-member Elders/Consensus Building Committee, as well as chairmen and vice chairmen of all the conference’s standing committees by 11 a.m. on Friday on the issue.
That means the chairman would meet with about 90 delegates to review the possibility of arriving at a consensus on the controversial derivation formula.
An earlier one proposed by the Elders committee on Wednesday was rejected by several delegates especially those from the southern part of the country.
The committee had proposed an increase in the derivation formula that would see oil producing states get 18 per cent of revenue from oil gotten from each state – up from 13 per cent -, 5 per cent of the revenue to develop mineral producing communities, and 5 per cent of Nigeria’s resource revenue for Northern states ravaged by the Boko Haram insurgency.

THE All Progressives Congress, APC, has advised Christians in Osun State to disregard the false information being circulated by PDP agents in some churches that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has instructed Christians in the state to vote for a Christian candidate in next month’s governorship election.

In a statement by its Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Mr Kunle Oyatomi, the APC said that it is not impossible that some officials and members of the churches involved may have received gratification from the opposition PDP to introduce religious sentiment into a purely political matter.

According to the APC, the Osun State branch of CAN leadership has categorically dissociated itself from such sentiment.
The party argued that the religion of a leader has nothing to do with the choice before citizens of Osun on August 9 saying “what is important is the quality of service which either of them has rendered to the people of Osun.”

It said “the vital question before our people is, between Aregbesola and Omisore who would you rely on to make life in Osun State better for the people? Omisore and his party, the PDP had been in the politics of Osun for nearly eight years between 2003 and 2010.

Their most outstanding achievement was the creation of Osun State University which was made beyond the reach of the poor. But for the most part, the duo of the PDP and Omisore practically ruined the State.

“There is no discrimination whatsoever between Christians and Moslems in his administration. When Aregbesola decided to feed 300,000 primary school children- he did not discriminate between Christian and Moslem children. Our balance, when you look at Christian- Christian governorship of PDP administration between 2003 and 2010 in comparison with the Moslem-Christian ticket that he has ruled Osun since 2010, responsible and reasonable Christians know the wide margin of difference between both. The latter outclasses the former”, it stated.

Besides, the party said “Christians don’t need any church, pastor or bishop to tell what is best for them. Christians are among the most rational people in Osun and they know that Omisore, the Christian candidate of the PDP is a notorious fellow. They cannot prefer him to the Moslem Aregbesola of the APC who has so transformed Osun from among the worst governed to one of the best administered states in the country today. His Moslem religion may have influenced his attitude to governance.”

To the utter chagrin of All Progressives Congress and her governorship candidate, who is also the Governor of Ekiti State,Dr Ayodele Fayose won a landslide victory over the incumbent and his former political ally Dr Kayode Fayemi. But , apart from the fact that, Dr Ayo Fayose had antecedents to defeat an incumbent Governor, as he did to Otunba Niyi Adebayo in 2003 governorship election. Dr Ayodele Fayose is also close to the people at grassroots, more than the incumbent Governor. Although Dr Kayode Fayemi, is a Ph. D holder, but Fayose is an excellent orator and a political strategist farther than the Governor. Fayose is also popular like the Governor, and more generous than the Governor.

And as a matter of fact, before the election, Governor Fayemi has lost contacts with the citizens of the state, particularly those in grassroots .And he has erected a bridge of animosities between himself and the students, particularly those in higher institution of learning, through his arbitrary and outrageous increment of tuition fees ,and his proscription of students union activities in the state university ,which ranged to more than two academic session. The Governor, a progressive to the core and a revolutionary, but administered like a river that forgotten his source, and through his policies he turned himself into a reactionary and a retrogressive. And many electorates were forced to choose Fayose as an alternative.

As the election was announced, in favor of Dr Ayo Fayose, PDP was jeering, laughing, rejoicing, and celebrating that the winning of Ekiti state, is a gate way to win back the south west. How naïve the leadership of the party is. PDP thought, they have woken up, but honestly the Party is still in deep sleep, and even snoring, I can hear it loudly. Honestly, the election that was in favor of the Party, have exposed the Party Achilles to APC.

The victory of PDP in Ekiti State,is more advantageous to the All Progressives Party than PDP ,the victory has exposed PDP permutations ahead of 2O15 to APC ,it will make the APC more focus, plan and vigilant ahead of 2015 elections.

The victory have revealed to APC, where her House is leaking and how to mend it, to know where there are loopholes and how to block them. PDP is ignorant by thinking that, the Ekiti election will dampen the Spirit of APC, but instead it will make the spirit of APC stronger. The PDP Pyrrhic victory has taught APC their mistakes, before the election and how to remedy them.

The PDP, because of their so called victory in Ekiti state now believing that, the same thing would repeat itself in Osun state, on Aug 9 governorship election. But alas! For PDP to think of such, is not only an illusion, or living in a fool paradise, but the Party to think of defeating Aregbesola in Osun, is an act of chasing a shadow, the Party is like fire extinguisher planning or working to extinguish the light of a moon, or the heat of sun.

May I wake up PDP up, from their slumber that Aregbesola is too far ahead of Omisore in Osun State, Aregbesola is like two men against one man in Osun State, Aregbesola has both the attributes of Fayose and Fayemi in the state of Osun. Aregbesola,,although an easy going and coolheaded , a progressive to the core and a radical cum revolutionary minded person. Aregbesola is also a grass root man, lover of the downtrodden, and a great philanthropist.

And in the coming gubernatorial electoral contest, Aregbesola is facing a man, which lacks a charismatic strength and vigor, a man that is suffering from political inadequate of good reputations and antecedents. Meanwhile in Ekiti State, Fayose has been a Governor and performed a bit, but Omisore as a former Deputy governor, if we are to ask ourselves, what he did in office, it’s not far fetch to know that, his greatest achievement was to publicly insulted Chief Bola Ige ,who was a former Governor and an Attorney General as at the time, another significant achievement of Omisore was ,when he incited impeachment against his Boss Chief Adebisi Ak ande.

Then as a Senator, his achievement was to publish an open full page letter in the national dallies ,by insulting the Honorable Judges who presided over the appeal governorship petition between Aregbesola and Oyinlola, in fact as a Senator that represented his senatorial district for eight year at Senate, he could not boast of ant tangible achievement.

The electorate in the State of Osun, are more wiser, and they will legitimately prevent anyone who wants to take them back, to the land of pain and agonies Aregbesola had rescued them from. No one should expect the Citizens of Osun to fold their arms and watching, If PDP arrests their leaders, as they did in Ekiti State, a day before the election. PDP should not forget that ‘’ those who makes peaceful changes impossible makes violent changes inevitable”.

PDP audacity and bragged to win all the Southwest back, and have easy ride to win the 2015 presidential election, because of her victory in the just concluded governorship election in Ekiti state, is nothing but a bunkum and childish talks. In fact, is comically nonsensical and ludicrous. Does PDP think Ekiti electorate voted for her? May I tell the party, that Ekiti electorate, were not allowed to vote, out of 700 registered voters, only three hundred plus, voted. And the majority of them voted for Fayose and not PDP.

There are no fools ,in the southwest among the electorates, particular those from Yoruba origin, except the disciples of Akintola(demo) who believes in plundering, looting, megalomania ,imposition, sit-tightness and amala politics. Southwest, will continues to reject PDP, be cause the worst government in Nigeria, being military or civilian Is the government of PDP ,particularly the present government of led by Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

It’s obvious; to see and know that Jonathan led PDP federal government has virtually lost virtue and morality. What is it, that good in the Party? What are the good things? That will urges the electorate to vote for PDP, is it the incompetence of the President Jonathan to tackle the problems of insecurity of lives and prosperity arisen from the menace of heartless sect, knows as Boko Haram, despite that in the last 3years, over 4trillion has been invested on security, and in the last four months 130 billion naira, has also been spent, yet the menace continues unabated.

Boko Haram attacks, in the last three years, have created more than ten thousands widow, destroyed more than five hundred churches, burnt more than eight hundred class room, abducted more than 200 girls who are teenagers, destroyed more than 209 schools in Yobe, and 300 in Borno state. In fact ,on May 2014,Boko Haram killed 300 people in Gamboru Ngala Borno state, abducted another 11 girls in Warabe and Wala communities ,burnt up to 200 vehicles and over one thousand houses and shops, were also set ablaze

To be frank, when we are talking of corruption, there is no party under the sun, that is more corrupt than the PDP James Ibori ,is now a prisoner in London, the PDP former Governor was jailed for money laundering, Diepreye Alamaieyseigha ,went to prison on corrupt charges, and under President Jonathan, the worst had happen. In fact, to Jonathan corruption is like a pamper beast, under his government , a minister bought two official cars with 225 million naira, and another minister chartered jet with 10 billion naira and for the first time, huge amount of money as in 20 billion dollars got missing. So what is it that good in PDP, which Nigerians will give their votes for, comes 2015? As at 6th of June 2014, the Central Bank of Nigeria revealed that 80% of Nigerian youths are unemployed, so what is it that good in PDP, Peoples Democratic Party, the party that is bereft of virtue and morality, the party that believes only in power and not the people.

Aregbesola, should not lose sleep over the antics and evil machinations of PDP and her Candidate, the quoted biblical injunction is a revelation of what is going to happen to the party, after August on 2014. Let them marks my saying, it’s not my words, but the words of God, Omisore ,to Aregbesola, is a case of towering giants that disdains a beaten path.

And to all the APC Leaders, the National Chairman , The National Leaders , the APC Governors and Asiwaju Tinubu in particulars, who has been a threat and a phobia of PDP over the years, should not be confused and trembled over what happened in Ekiti State. It’s not but just an eye opener; no good road will continues to be smoothening with easy ride. Such road leads, but to a destination of perdition and utter regrets.

#OSUNPOLL: Contestants sell themselves to the electorates…READ WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY

By most accounts, elections are usually preceded by political intrigues and subterfuges which may mar the processes and conclusion of the elections if not checked on time.

Political analysts observe that unlike in the past, recent public reactions to political developments, particularly on elections, tend to reinforce the fact that Nigeria’s democracy is becoming more stable.
They point at the recent governorship election in Ekiti State, in which the incumbent governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC), accepted his defeat by Mr Ayodele Fayode of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in good faith. Observers express the hope that the hitch-free and peaceful conduct of the Ekiti State governorship election will be replicated in Osun State’s governorship election come Aug. 9.
However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has repeatedly assured Nigerians that the Osun governorship election and the 2015 general elections would be free and fair. This assurance notwithstanding, observers insist that the contestants in the Osun polls should adhere strictly to the rules of the game by selling their programmes to the electorate and allowing the voters to make their choice.
In the lead-up to the Osun polls, the contestants have staged several political campaigns across the state, dishing out promises; all in the need to garner the electorate’s support. Although INEC has cleared 20 candidates of different political parties for the governorship election, observers, nonetheless, note that the election is somewhat a straight fight between APC and PDP candidates.
They argue that due to the antecedents of Gov. Rauf Aregbesola (APC) and Sen. Iyiola Omisore (PDP), the election is going to be a direct contest between the two candidates. They could, however, not rule out the possibility that a minority party may spring a surprise by producing the next governor of Osun if it has a populist, people-oriented manifesto.
However, the PDP has, on several occasions, vowed to replicate its victory in the June 21 Ekiti governorship election in Osun on Aug. 9. The PDP’s candidate, Omisore, has been trying to garner the goodwill of the electorate, explaining why he should become the next governor of the state.
“PDP will win Osun governorship election decisively because of the perceptible failures of Gov. Rauf Aregbesola’s administration in all spheres of government endeavours. “Till today, 87 per cent of Osun State has not witnessed any meaningful development at all. “The noise about road constructions is only limited to only two major roads; all the township roads and other Federal Government roads are abandoned. During our campaigns, we were forced to travel on very bad roads to reach the people. “Besides, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)-government in Osun has bastardised the education sector of the state.
“In fact, a couple of months ago, we asked Aregbesola to do away with his Opon Imo (computers distributed to students under the government’s e-learning programme). “He spent about N8.4 billion on the scheme. Opon Imo has few subjects with 87.4 per cent errors. There is no single illustrative diagram or graph in Opon Imo. “There is no single figure in its graph mathematics; there is no diagram for science subjects in Opon Imo. The same goes for all the students in JSS 1 to JSS 3. “So, there is a real confusion and the people of the state are fed up with it,’’ he added.
Omisore vowed to correct the anomaly if he was voted into power on Aug. 9. “With my experience as a former deputy governor and a senator for eight years; I believe I am the most suited for the job. “The main thrust of my administration’s policy will be on job creation, quality education, human capital development, infrastructure, health, roads, agriculture and commerce,’’ he added.
Omisore reiterated that he was on a “rescue mission’’ to bring good governance and pragmatic development to Osun and its citizens. He said that his eight cardinal programmes were aimed at promoting education, infrastructural development, transparency and accountability in governance, grassroots development and growth of the education sector, among others.
“Our primary focus will be on improving the wellbeing and social safety of the people; wealth creation and pensionable employment; agriculture, food security and rural development; peace and security and public service administration.
“We are going to fight poverty by giving young graduates jobs; we will also create small and medium scale enterprises to empower the people,’’ he added.
In the area of education, Omisore said that if voted into power, his government would invest massively in the education sector because of his belief that any investment in the development of education was a worthwhile venture.
“We are going to restore the quality of education in Osun; the management of public schools will be ceded to their original owners, if the people so desired. “The one-uniform policy of the government for all schools in the state will be abrogated and our women selling cloths and sewing school uniforms will be back in business,’’ he said.
Omisore urged the electorate to come out en-masse and vote for him, saying that they should all be involved in the ongoing campaign for a better society in Osun in a pragmatic way.
In a swift reaction to Omisore’s electioneering, Sen. Olusola Adeyeye, the Director-General of Aregbesola Campaign Organisation, stressed that the PDP victory in Ekiti State governorship election would never be replicated in Osun.
He vowed that Aregbesola would win the governorship election by a wide margin, saying that the massive turnout of people at the governor’s campaign rallies in towns like Iwo, Ikire, Ikirun and Ibokun was a clear testimony of the people’s support for his second-term bid.
“Just as people demonstrated their support for Aregbesola in 2007, they are visibly more committed to him, following his outstanding performance in his first term tenure of office,’’ Adeyeye said at a recent forum in Osogbo.
Besides, Aregbesola solicited the people’s support for the state government’s new education policy, while inaugurating some buildings at the Baptist Elementary Primary School, Ilare, Ile-Ife, recently.
He warned the critics of his administration and its education policy to be patient, insisting that the policy would produce good results in the long run. The governor stressed that the focus of the education policy was on promoting the wellbeing of teachers and students of the state’s public schools.
Aregbesola said that the government was planning to build 20 well-equipped high schools, 50 middle schools and 100 elementary schools. Mr Sunday Akere, the Commissioner for Information, said that the state government had committed the larger part of its financial resources to education.
He said that the government was also providing free meals for primary school pupils in classes one to four every day.
“The government has spent N900 million on the provision of free uniform to students across the state; it also spent N1.2 billion on Opon Imo and N14.8 billion on the construction of school buildings under its `O’ School programme,’’ he said.
Drumming up support for Aregbesola in the Aug. 9 election, Akere emphasised that his administration had recruited no fewer than 10,470 teachers. He said that the government was also paying N10, 000 monthly to elders, whose ages were above 65 years, in the state.
In his campaign, Alhaji Fatai Akinbade, the governorship candidate for the Labour Party (LP), pledged to provide free health care for pregnant women in the state if voted into power. He said that the focus of his qualitative free health programme, if he became governor, would be on pregnant women so as to reduce maternal mortality rate and ensure safe childbirths in the state.
Dr Eunice Adedayo, the leader of Women for Positive Change, pledged that women would support Akinbade in the election, adding that the manifesto of the LP was aimed at promoting the interests of the masses.
Other candidates who are contesting the governorship election on the platform of different political parties also made different promises to the electorate during their electioneering.
The candidates include Adeoye Adeyinka of Action Alliance (AA), Niyi Owolade of Accord Party (AP), Sunday Fajinmi of Alliance for Democracy (AD), Akintunde Adetunji of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Rafiu Anifowose of Citizens Popular Party (CPP).
Others are Jimoh Afolayan of National Conscience Party (NCP), Segun Adegoke of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Gbenga Gabriel of African Democratic Congress (ADP), Agboola Obasanjo of African People’s Alliance (APA) and Oludare Akinola of Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM).
Ganiyu Lawal of Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA), Funsho Bunmi of United Democratic Party (UDP), Ibrahim Adeoti of Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Victor Adeniyi of United Progressive Party (UPP) and Segun Akinwusi of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) are also vying for the governorship post.
Concerned citizens, however, appeal to the electorate in Osun to look beyond the pragmatics of the candidates’ rhetoric to specific areas which spur them to make informed choices on whom to vote for on Aug. 9. They also urge the candidate who eventually wins the election to live up to his campaign promises, particularly those that are aimed at promoting the people’s wellbeing. (NANFeatures)

As governorship candidates of political parties strategise for the August 9 governorship election in Osun State, the General Overseer of the Living Faith Church (aka Winners’ Chapel), Bishop David Oyedepo, on Wednesday, said the infrastructural renewal of Governor Rauf Aregbesola were affecting the people positively. He also declared that the new educational policy, which had culminated in the building of mega schools in the state deserves global applause.
Bishop Oyedepo, who made this known during a courtesy call on Aregbesola at the Bola Ige House, Osogbo, said that “any governance that is producing results and affecting the lives of vast majority of the people, must be deeply appreciated”.
While imploring the stakeholders to always be at the vanguard of peaceful co-existence, the clergy affirmed that “there is nothing like living in peace, working peace and promoting peace”.
According to Oyedepo, “there is nothing like peace in the whole world. We should always walk towards whatever will promote peace and peaceful co-existence among our people.
