2015: Yar’Adua’s loyalists back Buhari’s candidacy

The group, which moved into the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) late last year to hijack the structure, was reported to have recently agreed to support the former military leader due to the challenges of fielding another candidate and what a source within the group called the need for “a rallying point for the opposition against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the next general election.

Those in the Yar‘Adua group include many of his ministers from the northern part of the country, his National Security Adviser, many federal lawmakers from the North as well as a retinue of political appointees, who served under the late president.

This is coming against the backdrop of alleged renewed romance between the Buhari caucus and the leadership of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) which led to a reported discussion between the two groups in Kaduna recently.

Nigerian Tribune investigations showed that Buhari‘s ambition to re-run for the presidency in 2015 secured the backing of the Yar‘Adua group at its recent meeting in Abuja with chieftains of the caucus pledging financial and logistic support to the CPC and the ambition of the general.
