Yemisi Shyllon offers his thoughts on the Nigerian Broadcasters’ Merit Awards.

It’s exhausting when you run through some list of award nominees – too long, almost like everyone in town has a place there which just kills the exclusivity that should come from being nominated for something good. As if that wasn’t enough sore to deal with, I bumped into the Most Popular Radio Presenter’s list and K-show of City FM is a nominee! Providence sure has a sense of humour because if it has anything to do with skill, knowledge and ideas, K-show has not proven himself to be worthy of any nomination alongside Ik Osakioduwa of Rhythm FM, Mannie of Cool FM, or Sola Thompson of Inspiration FM. Sometimes I wonder how they choose their nominees! K-show is an arrogant OAP, he scolds his guests, is blatantly rude, boring, and extremely caught up in a delusional sense of accomplishment that he throws at his listeners every time he is on-air.
Every day he reminds us he was once nominated (as a rapper) with the likes of Asa. He goes on about how he has contributed to rap music in Nigeria; he criticizes without any solid knowledge of his subject matter. K-show doesn’t understand music – he doesn’t even know the difference between a Timaya and a Duncan Mighty! It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so irritating! K-show has less than 400 followers on twitter! Yes, his account was hacked at some point (a little bird tells me that he stepped on the wrong toes. LOL!); and just 200 followers was what he had before.
So in essence, K-show has less than a thousand followers on twitter yet he is up for an award as a popular radio presenter! Can we just stop being so ridiculous? I am sure the guys behind the Awards have never really listened to K-show. If they have and survived it, then I must commend them. Again, if they have and still thought him befitting of a nomination as most popular male OAP, then something is wrong somewhere. Can we please not deride the work of presenters truly worth their moment of glory with some bad-tasting poorly researched list?
And then, there is the sexiest female radio presenter list - now tell me, how do you decide a radio presenter is sexy when you don’t get to SEE them? We hear their voices - so is the “sexy” based on their diction, voice or choice of music? Someone help me!
