In
what might be seen as a subtle political re-alignment, northern
governors preferred to attend the wedding ceremony of two of the
daughters of Vice-President Namadi Sambo in Kaduna state Saturday, while
the entire south west governors for unknown reasons yet, stayed away
entirely from the burial ceremony of Chief Meni Innocent Jonathan,
President Goodluck Jonathan’s younger brother in Otuoke, Bayelsa state.
Only government contractors, business moguls, actors, Peoples Democratic
Party stalwarts and members of Jonathan’s cabinet, attended the solemn
gathering. However, the condolence message of the Governor of Ogun
State, Mr, Ibukunle Amosun, was published in the programme of events.
Late Chief Meni Jonathan Aged 47, Laid To Rest Yesterday, Saturday, December 8th 2012 In Otuoke, Bayelsa State.
The solemn ceremony was, however, attended by the South-East and
South-South governors with the exception of governors Mr. Liyel Imoke of
Cross River State who was observing a two-month accumulated leave and
Mr. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State.
In his homily, the Bishop of Ogbia Diocese, James Ayo Oruwori, said the late Meni lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation.
Meanwhile, Presidents Ernest Koroma of Sierra Leone and Joyce Banda
of Malawi respectively, have sent condolence letters to the President.
In their letters, they said they were saddened by the news of Meni’s death.
Meni Jonathan, 47, who passed on in Abuja on November 20th 2012 of cardiac arrest, was the chairman of Otuoke Council of Chiefs.
