7-year-old girl kills herself with skipping rope

The joyful trip turned deadly when the 7-year-old girl died in Sammamish, Washington, after she accidentally strangled herself with a jump rope.

Spokesperson of the King County Sheriff's Sgt. Cindi West said the girl, along with her brother, 5, babysitter, 30, and mother of the babysitter, 60, were in the Samantha Smith Elementary School Tuesday, when she started playing with the rope wrapping it around her neck. She proceeded to go down the slide.

"Either the body weight trapped her under the rope or the rope snagged at something and began to choke her," West said this morning. "She slid all the way down the slide and lay face down and unconscious when she was found."

West said the girl was left alone, while her brother and two guards were picking berries. The girl had been told repeatedly by their caregivers not to put the rope around her neck, West said.

She was taken unconscious to Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue, Washington, but could not be revived by doctors. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The death is being investigated by the Major Crimes Unit, which "is standard on all deaths of children", but seems to be accidental, West said.
