Suspects to remain in custody
The Oyo State Police Command yesterday said it has extended its search for Mrs. Titilayo Rotimi, wife of the former Military Governor of the Western State, Gen. Oluwole Rotimi (rtd.), to other states.
Mrs. Rotimi was abducted by gunmen in front of her company on the Ibadan-Ife Expressway, on December 10, around 6:30pm.
Eyewitnesses said she was forced into a Primera car and taken to an unknown destination.
Police spokesman Mr. Ayodele Lanade told The Nation yesterday that the command was yet to get a strong clue about her whereabouts.
He said the command had extended its search to other states and urged the public to assist them with information.
Lanade assured residents that the command would rescue Mrs. Rotimi.
He said the police have secured a court order to detain nine of the 10 suspects arrested in relation with the abduction, pending the conclusion of their investigation.
Lanade said the only female suspect was released on bail to allow her nurse her baby.

Oranyan festival: Ooni is ignorant, says Alaafin

BY OLA AJAYI
IBADAN—The perennial rivalry between the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi and Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade resurfaced weekend as the former described Oba Sijuade  as someone who  is not knowledgeable about his ancestral origin.
The two foremost Yoruba monarchs have been embroiled in crisis over the control of Yorubaland.
The disagreement which had abated after the creation of Osun State, reared its head again recently when Ooni said the Alaafin did not have the rights to celebrate Oranyan, one of the sons of Oduduwa because the deity was not known in Oyo town as claimed by the Alaafin.
Despite many attempts made to make Oba Adeyemi respond to the accusation he kept sealed lips.
Ooni had alleged that Alaafin was reigning over a dead empire.
But, while responding in his palace at a special birthday lecture organized in his honour by the ‘City People Magazine’, entitled: ‘Reviving Old Oyo Customs and Tradition’, he hinted that he did not respond because of the intervention of the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo at a meeting where Oba Sijuade, the Awujale of Ijebu, Oba Oyebade Lipede were in attendance.
Ooni of Ife                                              Alaafin of Oyo
Alaafin recalled that Oba Sijuade had said, “he(Alaafin) is not Oranyan”, but he turned deaf ears because he wanted absolute concentration during the celebration of Oranyan.
Explaining why he broke the silence, he  said Ooni did not refrain from condemning him and his traditional activities.  Alaafin claimed Oyo is superior to Ife in many ramifications.
“Where did this Yoruba Language that we are speaking evolve from? Which language was used in writing the Bible? It is Oyo language. Why not Ife language? Where else are they speaking Ife language apart from Lagere Quarters? Why are the Modakeke people, who are living behind Ife not speaking Ife language?”, Alaafin asked.
Alaafin further clarified that he had posed so many questions to Ooni which, he alleged,  “instead, he came with books that could fill three baskets”.
“In 2009, Ooni had rubbished the institution of Alaafin, but a year after when he was celebrating his birthday, he said Oranyan was his father’s ancestor. How could you have denigrated your ancestors and later claimed that you are a son of the Alaafin. Anybody who does not know his ancestral roots, who did not strive to learn about it, and does not learn from those who know, will continue to make mistakes and flounder in ignorance. That is part of Ooni’s inadequacies”, he said.
“When we wanted to celebrate Sango, they said Sango is not Yoruba. Sango studied Quoran. He was the one that was first conferred with the title of ‘Akeugberu’. He was the first in the art of adjudicating justly. When he was born, the umbilical chord that joined him with his mother could not be severed. Because they pulled it and it would not cut, it became the name ‘Afonja’. The glory, success and tradition of Yoruba started from Oyo”, he stated.
Alaafin alluded to a period during the tenure of late Chief Bola Ige (SAN) when a “stamped paper recognising Oranyan as the Head of the Princes and Princesses in Yorubaland, and that Oyo dominated all other nations, namely: Ife, Ijebu, Egba, Ijesa, Sabe, Owu and so on”.
He reminded people of some historical facts when Messrs. Richard Lander and McPherson visited Oyo Ile in 1827, saying the white men saw some historical structures in Oyo Ile. He warned that Ooni should not distort historical facts further.
The Director, Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Albert, commended Alaafin for epitomizing the rich African cultural heritage.

The Court of Appeal in Benin City, Edo State yesterday ordered the state Chief Judge to re-assign the case of unlawful dissolution of the state House of Assembly Service Commission to another judge for trial.
The former chairman and members of the commission had approached the court for a reinstatement following their sack before the expiration of their tenure of office by the then Speaker of the state House of Assembly; Mr. Bright Omokhodion, through a resolution of the Assembly.
At first, when the aggrieved party approached the lower court, it struck out the case on the grounds that it was wrongly commenced through an originating summons.
The sacked commission had wanted the court to determine whether by resolution of the House, the lawmakers can dissolve a statutory board and to also determine whether the house could exercise executive powers to remove them.
In his ruling therefore, the presiding Judge, Justice George Shoremi held that the High Court was wrong in law to have struck out the case, saying, “it was an error for it to have arrived at such a conclusion”.
Justice Shoremi further directed that the case be re-assigned to another judge.

House Wants Museum Named After Enahoro

Onwuka Nzeshi in Abuja
The House of Representatives Tuesday urged the Federal Government to re-name the National Museum Centre in Benin-City after Chief Anthony Enahoro, one of Nigeria’s heroes of independence and  icon of democracy.

The demand came through a motion sponsored by Hon Friday Itulah (PDP/Edo) who recalled the demise of Enahoro two years ago and sought his immortalisation in appreciation of his contributions to national development.

Itulah said Enahoro apart from his record in the independence struggle, had left legacies which could inspire learning and political thought in Nigeria and beyond.

“The man was a political icon who brought his wealth of experience into the Nigerian political scene to emancipate the Nigerian people from colonialism. The memory of Chief Anthony Enahoro will ever be remembered in history if the House could accord due respect to this former member of the House of Representatives.
We can do this by resolving to urge  the Federal Government to re-name National Museum Centre, Benin-City as Chief Anthony Enahoro National Museum Centre, Benin-City, Edo State,” Itulah said.
The motion was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers.

Also yesterday, the House mandated its committee on Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to investigate the circumstances that resulted in the abandonment of the Lambata-Bida-Mokwa-Jebba-Ilorin Federal Highway.

Hon. Ibrahim Ebbo who sponsored a motion to draw the attention of the House to the road disclosed that FERMA had commenced rehabilitation of the road two years ago but suddenly abandoned it after covering a few kilometers. The road, according
to Ebbo was constructed 50 years ago and had not undergone
any comprehensive maintenance since then.
The FERMA Committee has three weeks to submit the findings of its investigation.
Meanwhile the House rejected a bill seeking to establish the Nigeria Police Reform Trust Fund. The bill suffered a death blow as lawmakers kicked against it, recalling how some self-styled non-governmental organisations had set up a similar fund in the past that enriched some individuals but failed to address the needs of the Nigeria Police.

Halliburton bribe scandal: US angry with FG

  • Written by  Christian Okeke-Abuja
THE United States government is not happy with the way the Halliburton bribe scandal was handled by the Federal Government, though it said it is assisting the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to do self investigation.

While  expressing displeasure, the United States accused the Federal Government of not doing enough in the fight against corruption and cited the case of the former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, who was acquitted in Nigeria but found guilty in the United Kingdom.

International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Officer in the United States, Kohn Diane, told journalists at the US Embassy in Abuja, on Tuesday, that the fact that the company involved in the scandal was punished abroad, while local beneficiaries were left off the hook raised questions against Nigeria.

Ms Diane admitted that corruption was a global issue, but argued that it went beyond exchange of money to include abuse of trusted power for private gains.

She made case  for proper funding of  security agencies and continuous training of judges and prosecutors, which she noted the United States would assist Nigeria to achieve.

She further maintained that the United States would continue to assist Nigeria with funds to combat terrorism financing and other forms of fraud, while the EFCC would continue to receive assistance on its investigation of fraud cases.

Anti-Corruption Network Exposes Five Properties Owned By Minister Orubebe

Orubebe's Ministers Hill mansion built by SETRACO
By SaharaReporters, New York
An anti-corruption group led by former House of Representatives member, Dino Melaye, has revealed five properties purchased by the Minister of the Niger Delta, Godsday Orubebe.

The choice properties were acquired in the last three years that Mr. Orubebe has been a minister, first under the late President Umaru Yar’Adua and later as one of the most powerful figures in the cabinet of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Mr. Melaye’s group revealed that a construction company, SETRACO, built and delivered a brand new mansion to Mr. Orubebe less than six months after the company received a contract to build part of the East-West highway in the Niger Delta region.
Mr. Melaye’s group obtained documents indicating that Mr. Orubebe was the owner of the properties they identified. One of the documents is the certificate of occupancy for Plot 2722, Kyami District in Abuja. The plot contains 1883.63 square meters. Another certificate of occupancy obtained by the group shows that Mr. Orubebe owns Plot 2460 in the notoriously expensive Maitama area of Abuja. In addition, the minister, who is reputed as one of the most corrupt associates of President Jonathan, also owns Plot 1736 in the Guzape area of Abuja. The certificate of occupancy for the plot was issued in 2008. The Minister for the Niger Delta also acquired Plot 2057 in the Asokoro area.
A source at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission told SaharaReporters that he was not aware that the anti-corruption agency had opened any investigation into Mr. Orubebe’s land deals or other financial activities. “As far as I know, the EFCC is not investigating Elder Orubebe,” said the source, adding that the agency was unlikely to act “unless the Presidency specifically orders us to go after him.”

Mr. Orubebe’s land documents are attached:

2015: Yar’Adua’s loyalists back Buhari’s candidacy

  • Written by  Olawale Rasheed- Abuja
The group, which moved into the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) late last year to hijack the structure, was reported to have recently agreed to support the former military leader due to the challenges of fielding another candidate and what a source within the group called the need for “a rallying point for the opposition against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the next general election.

Those in the Yar‘Adua group include many of his ministers from the northern part of the country, his National Security Adviser, many federal lawmakers from the North as well as a retinue of political appointees, who served under the late president.

This is coming against the backdrop of alleged renewed romance between the Buhari caucus and the leadership of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) which led to a reported discussion between the two groups in Kaduna recently.

Nigerian Tribune investigations showed that Buhari‘s ambition to re-run for the presidency in 2015 secured the backing of the Yar‘Adua group at its recent meeting in Abuja with chieftains of the caucus pledging financial and logistic support to the CPC and the ambition of the general.
