What Did Pope Benedict Do, Anyway?

By Igor Volsky

Pope Benedict XVI, who took office in 2005, announced on Monday that he will resign on Feb. 28, the first pope to leave the papacy since Pope Gregory XII in 1415. The 85-year-old pontiff is in poor health and has been advised by doctors “not to take any more transatlantic trips.” Reports indicate that “he has considered stepping down for months.”
“After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” he said in a statement issued by the Vatican.
Pope Benedict is regarded as a conservative theologian who has asserted that Catholicism is the “true” religion that is in competition with Islam, has repeatedly spoken out against same-sex relationships, and “restated the Roman Catholic Church’s ban on women priests.” During his annual Christmas speech to the Vatican, the pontiff called same-sex marriage a “manipulation of nature” to be deplored and an attack on the “essence of the human creature.” He claimed that attempts to pass marriage equality “harm and help to destabilize marriage” and present “serious harm to justice and peace.”
Still, at times, the pontiff has relied on Catholic teaching to advance progressive causes:
– Addressing climate change. Benedict was dubbed the “Green Pope” for his commitment to environmental concerns. He boosted “efforts to make Vatican City more environmentally efficient,” used “Roman Catholic doctrine to emphasize humanity’s responsibility to care for the planet,” and called on world leaders to “agree on a responsible, credible and supportive response to this worrisome and complex phenomenon, keeping in mind the needs of the poorest populations and of future generations.”
– A fair and equitable economy. “[T]he economy cannot be measured only by maximization of profit but rather according to the common good,” he said in 2011 during a visit to Spain. In a 2009 treatise, the pontiff called for protections for “labour unions — which have always been encouraged and supported by the Church,” the elimination of world hunger through “wealth redistribution,” the protection of the “natural environment” — “God’s gift to everyone” — from unchecked economic expansion, and a strengthened “family of nations,” like the U.N. with “real teeth.”
– Universal health care. At an international papal conference on health care in November of 2010, at the Vatican, Pope Benedict and other Catholic church leaders said it is the “moral responsibility of nations to guarantee access to health care for all of their citizens, regardless of social and economic status or their ability to pay.” Saying access to adequate medical care is one of the “inalienable rights” of man, the pope said, “Justice in health care should be a priority of governments and international institutions.” Catholic bishops, however, led the charge against Obamacare’s contraception requirements and have rejected the Obama administration’s latest compromise.
– Immigration reform. Pope Benedict had been a supporter of U.S. immigrants, regardless of their legal status, urging the Bush administration to treat immigrants with human dignity. The United States must do “everything possible to fight…all forms of violence so that immigrants may lead dignified lives,” the pope said when asked if he would address the issue of Latin American immigrants with Bush in 2008.
In 2010, as the Catholic Church sought to deal with widespread allegations of child abuse, Pope Benedict found himself in the “center of a mounting scandal.” After reports surfaced that he may have avoided disciplining guilty priests as a Cardinal, some critics called for his resignation.

'Anyone WORSHIPPING with Adeboye and Oyedepo are in a C.U.LT.' - Kemu Olunloyo

One can describe Kemi Olunloyo in many ways, an outspoken journalist, media expert, advocate, politician, deportee, the list goes on.
The daughter of former governor of Oyo State, Omololu Olunloyo is one outspoken woman that keeps on talking even when it threatens her life, she’s come under attack so many times but that has not stopped her in any way from posting comments online.
Recently, reports that she had complained about Yoruba people altering their real names on Facebook sparked reactions from all corners of social networking sites.
Olunloyo had posted:
“Nigerians really irritate me on Facebook when they alter their names into these eyesore names. As a member of the Community standards team at Facebook, u are not allowed a fake name. Many Nigerians in the Yoruba tribe where I am from, disgustingly alter the spellings of their names to horrible proportions. These beautiful African names are defaced due to lack of self esteem. I reported 10 last week on FB and they were told to produce ID before their pages could be re-opened. They got mad at me. I clearly warned them beforehand. Even ppl with other fake nicknames need to be reported if you see them without a real name. I don’t see this trend in other tribes in Nigeria. #SMH
My full name is Olukemi Omololu-Olunloyo spelled like a eyesore is Holukehmi Hormololoo-Howloonlawyour”
When we decided to look for the source of this comment, we stumbled on far more shocking opinions from herself.
Just before like many others who thought her statements aren’t real, Olunloyo made it clear on her Facebook page that they were:
”Nigerians, why are yáll so WEAK to think my acct has been hacked when u see a shocking status. Don’t u have people that KEEP it REAL in Nigeria?,” she posted.
Here are 10 controversial comments from Kemi Olunloyo:
1. Igbos are the wisest Nigerians. If they were all deported to Imo/Anambra/Enugu, the Economy of Ibadan will collapse!
2. Anyone WORSHIPING with Adeboye and Oyedepo are in a C.U.LT. they are all risking DEATH like Jim Jones congregation.

My statuses are designed to read the Nigerian mind and mentality. I want to fix this country and being a politician is not the only way to do it.
10. I once proposed to AKON in Canada. He loves Nigerian women.
Love her or hate her, Olunloyo who has plans to head to the Senate in 2015, will keep on talking in her hope to change the Nigerian mentality.

3 Wazobia FM Staff Arrested, Detained by Police

The Police in Kano state has detained three staff of Wazobia FM, investigating the contents of a programme they aired last week.

According to head of station, Salisu Bello Kankarofi, Mohammed Suleiman Gama (Head of programmes), Yakubu Musa Fagge (Presenter) and Mubarak Muhamad Sani (Reporter) were invited to the Bompai Police HQ around 9:30am on Sunday for questioning and have remained in detention since then.

Trouble started after the station aired a programme on alleged fraud in the polio vaccination exercise a few days before the attack on vaccination workers in two local government areas, leading to the death of 9 of them.
The station had packaged an investigative report on the conduct of the exercise after an attack on one of its reporters, Mubarak Sani, at the home of the Alh. Rabo while polio officials and a group of men said to be PDP supporters were trying to force Rabo to allow the immunisation officials vaccinate his children. In the course of collecting information in the ensuing fracas, Sani was allegedly beaten up and his equipment seized.
The police are trying to establish a connection between the contents of the said programme and the shooting of the vaccination workers.

We did not force APGA to join APC – ACN

By

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has said it did not force the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) to join the newly-formed All Progressive Congress (APC).
Reacting to APGA’s published disclaimer of the APC, ACN’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, that the new party has absolute respect for the rights of individuals or groups in a democratic setting.
Explaining how APGA joined the merger talks, Mohammed said: ‘’We recognise the person and status of Governor Rochas Okorocha, who as Imo Governor has been a great player and figure in Nigerian political landscape, as well as Senator Annie Okonkwo, a seasoned politician and respectable lawmaker.
‘’We believe in their representation that APGA is interested in the merger; hence we worked with them in good faith. They participated effectively and positively in the meeting of all governors of the parties concerned and in the meetings of the merger committees of the parties, leading to the communique released by all the Governors endorsing the merger and the eventual announcement of the merger by the committees.
‘’However, going by the statement signed on behalf of some APGA members by Dr. Tim Menakaya, the APC had come to the full realisation that there is dissent in the rank and file of the party (APGA), the statement added.

N13.5bn debt: AMCON takes over Babalakin’s property

by Idris Ahmed

The main entrance of one of the sealed properties at No 43A Afribank Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has taken over property belonging to a Lagos businessman and lawyer, Wale Babalakina, over the alleged N13.5 billion debt.
Daily Trust learnt that a detachment of armed policemen and bailiffs of the Federal High Court, Lagos, Friday evening took possession of the property located at 43A, Afribank Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
AMCON said the action was in execution of interim orders granted by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke against Roygate Properties Limited, believed to be owned by Babalakin.
The orders were sequel to an ex-parte application filed by the AMCON in a suit marked: FHC/L/CS/1501/2012. Copies of the orders made on February 5 were conspicuously pasted on the gates of the VI house.
Justice Aneke granted AMCON “interim possession of the property at 43A” Afribank Street, pursuant to a tripartite legal mortgage registered on October 14, 2010 between Roygate (the borrower), Stabilini Visioni Limited (surety/mortgagor) and Guaranty Trust Bank (the lender.)
The court also granted AMCON similar possession over properties at Plots 270 and 273 Trans Amadi Layout, Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
The court restrained Roygate, its directors, subsidiaries and sister companies from transferring or dealing with any of its funds in 20 banks listed in the application, or anywhere else up to the N13.5 billion allegedly owed by the company.
Justice Aneke restrained the banks from allowing Roygate to “operate any bank accounts” held by it in the banks.
The court ordered the banks to serve on AMCON lawyers within seven days of the service of the order on them, “an affidavit disclosing the respondent’s (Roygate’s) balance on accounts held with the said banks jointly and severally as at the date of the order.”
Justice Aneke also ordered the Nigeria Police Force to assist in the enforcement of the orders, which he held, should subsist pending the determination of the substantive suit.
Justices Aneke set February 19 as the return date.

Pope Benedict XVI To Resign On Feb. 28 Due To Health Concerns

The Vatican says Pope Benedict XVI will resign on Feb. 28, The Associated Press reported. The 85-year-old pope announced the decision on Monday, and cited health concerns as the reason for his departure.
Here's more from The Associated Press:
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday that he would resign on Feb. 28 because he was simply too infirm to carry on — the first pontiff to do so in nearly 600 years. The decision sets the stage for a conclave to elect a new pope before the end of March.
The 85-year-old pope announced his decision in Latin during a meeting of Vatican cardinals on Monday morning.
He emphasized that carrying out the duties of being pope — the leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics worldwide — requires "both strength of mind and body."
"After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths due to an advanced age are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry," he told the cardinals. "I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only by words and deeds but no less with prayer and suffering.
"However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the barque of St. Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary — strengths which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me."
The last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII, who stepped down in 1415 in a deal to end the Great Western Schism among competing papal claimants.
Benedict called his choice "a decision of great importance for the life of the church."
The move sets the stage for the Vatican to hold a conclave to elect a new pope by mid-March, since the traditional mourning time that would follow the death of a pope doesn't have to be observed.
There are several papal contenders in the wings, but no obvious front-runner — the same situation when Benedict was elected pontiff in 2005 after the death of Pope John Paul II.
When Benedict was elected pope at age 78 — already the oldest pope elected in nearly 300 years — he had been already planning to retire as the Vatican's chief orthodoxy watchdog to spend his final years writing in the "peace and quiet" of his native Bavaria.
Contenders to be his successor include Cardinal Angelo Scola, archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, the archbishop of Vienna, and Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the Canadian head of the Vatican's office for bishops.
Longshots include Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York. Although Dolan is popular and backs the pope's conservative line, the general thinking is that the Catholic Church doesn't need a pope from a "superpower."
All cardinals under age 80 are allowed to vote in the conclave, the secret meeting held in the Sistine Chapel where cardinals cast ballots to elect a new pope. As per tradition, the ballots are burned after each voting round; black smoke that snakes out of the chimney means no pope has been chosen, while white smoke means a pope has been elected.
Popes are allowed to resign; church law specifies only that the resignation be "freely made and properly manifested."
Only a handful have done so, however and there's good reason why it hasn't become commonplace: Might the existence of two popes — even when one has stepped down — lead to divisions and instability in the church? Might a new resignation precedent lead to pressures on future popes to quit at the slightest hint of infirmity?
Benedict himself raised the possibility of resigning if he were simply too old or sick to continue on in 2010, when he was interviewed for the book "Light of the World."
"If a pope clearly realizes that he is no longer physically, psychologically and spiritually capable of handling the duties of his office, then he has a right, and under some circumstances, also an obligation to resign," Benedict said.
The former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger had an intimate view as Pope John Paul II, with whom he had worked closely for nearly a quarter-century, suffered through the debilitating end of his papacy.
