Twenty years after June 12, By Hafsat Abiola Costello

Hafsat Abiola-Costello
“June 12 was a people’s movement, born out of the collective frustration and anger of Nigerian people at the direction our country was going”.
Twenty years ago, Nigerians trooped out in their millions, to vote in accordance with their conscience, at an election meant to serve as the culmination of General Ibrahim Babangida’s democratic transition program.
Today as we reflect on that epoch making event, let us recall the collective sacrifices Nigerians made to change our destiny. Many often speak about MKO Abiola as the symbol of June 12, and I shall come back to speak about the man and his vision shortly. But first let us recall that June 12 was a people’s movement, born out of the collective frustration and anger of Nigerian people at the direction our country was going. It was a movement that was given its first breath of life by students across Nigeria who engaged in protests against the lack of jobs in the economy. It was sustained by our activists, our market women, our unions, our journalists, and our progressive politicians.
Perhaps, it would seem self-evident, altogether natural and fitting that MKO would emerge as the symbol of this dynamic, grassroots movement. His decisive win during the elections made him the clear symbol and rallying point for the pro-democracy movement. A people’s man who walked in the corridors of power in Nigeria and around the world, he remained steadfast in defense of his democratic mandate in the face of deceit, betrayal, and treachery from his so-called friends; intimidation, threats and murder of Kudirat, one of his wives, by the military; and finally he paid for his commitment with his own life.
But today is not a day for sorrow. No, not even when the main beneficiaries of his sacrifice fail to honor the ideals for which these true democrats laid down their lives; not even when the national leadership since 1999 has sought to wipe MKO’s name out of our living memory; no, not even when poverty eats more deeply into the minds and bodies of Nigerians than it did in 1993.
Today is the day when true democrats rise up again, and dust off our shoes. Today is the day when we look at one another and say ’20 years later, we have come full circle.’ For on this day, we begin the march for true democracy once again. We begin our second battle for independence. As the progressives across the land come together in a coalition party, we are set for an election not unlike the June 12 election. Our political landscape will soon be set for another democratic election between two main parties, a contest that will force our people to move beyond primordial sentiments towards performance as the means for securing popular support.
Unlike the 1993 election, however, this time, the progressives may find that their daring, their determination, their courage and commitment will be rewarded with victory. So on this day, let us say thank you to those that blazed the trail. Let us look at each other and acknowledge that now the journey continues. May 2015 see blossoming of democracy in Nigeria.

S/Arabia slashes Nigeria’s hajj slots

Relevant Saudi departments, according to a news report published in the Saudi Gazette, are currently working out modalities for the implementation of directives by the authorities to that effect.
Saudi Arabian authorities have announced plans to reduce the number of external pilgrims by 20 percent and those from within the Kingdom by 50 percent in the coming hajj season.
The reduction in the number of local and foreign pilgrims, it was gathered, was necessitated by “the giant development projects currently being undertaken” in the Grand Mosque and other holy sites in the Kingdom.
In a statement yesterday, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) confirmed that the Saudi authorities have slashed Nigeria’s hajj seats from 95,000 to 76,000.
Spokesman of the commission Alhaji Uba Mana said the reduction does not affect Nigeria alone as it is a worldwide issue.
He confirmed that Saudi authorities have slashed the total number of pilgrims from all over the world for this year’s hajj by 20 percent.
The Saudi authorities, in a letter sent to the commission, said the measures being taken were due to the ongoing construction works at the Holy Mosque in Mecca, which may not be completed before the 2013 hajj season.
The commission called on states pilgrims’ welfare boards, hajj agencies and other stakeholders to affect the changes as it was made to provide comfort to the pilgrims from all over the world.
“The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) wishes to notify all states pilgrims welfare boards, agencies and other stakeholders that the commission has received a notice from Saudi Arabia on the 20% global reductions in hajj seat allocations for 2013 hajj exercise affecting all countries”, NAHCON spokesman Alhaji Mana said.
The statement also quoted Saudi Minister of Hajj Affairs Dr Bandar Bin-Muhammad al-Hajjar as explaining that the usual capacity of Haram is the maximum of 48,000, but as the expansion projects commenced the number was reduced to 20,000 representing 22 percent.
Consequently, the commission said the 95, 000 seats allocated to Nigeria has now scaled down to 76,000 pilgrims.
But sources close to the Nigerian tour operators said the cut in the number of pilgrims will begin this Ramadan as more than half the number of intending pilgrims from Nigeria may not secure Umrah visa.
Daily Trust was also told that the cost of securing a visa to Saudi Arabia for the lesser hajj this Ramadan could go for more than N300,000 as against the N85,000 charged in the previous years.
“This development has discouraged many intending Umrah pilgrims; in fact, many have decided not to go because of the uncertainty as regards the exercise this Ramadan; the reality is that many cannot afford it because of the high cost and other difficulties likely to be encountered as a result of the cut in the number of those going for the lesser hajj by the Saudi authorities”, the source said.
A competent source at the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) confirmed the development, saying however that there was no official communication between the commission and the Saudi authorities on the matter.
On whether the quota for Umrah in the coming Ramadhan will be slashed, the source said it is mere interpretation by tour operators. He, however, confirmed that this year’s Umrah visa has only 15 days validity as against the usual 30 days granted previously.
Saudi authorities said the Mosque expansion projects were aimed at enabling the pilgrims and visitors to complete their hajj and Umrah rites with ease.
Also, Saudi Hajj Minister, Dr Bandar Al-Hajjar, denied that the number of visas granted to Umrah companies would be reduced this year. He said slots have been distributed to cover the whole year.
“The companies should use the visas granted to them on time and should not hold them to be used in one month,” he said.
Under the new arrangement, according to the minister, the visas will be granted on a monthly basis, and the companies are expected to use them the same month.
“If the visas are not used during the same month, they will be cancelled,” the minister warned.
He expressed worry that Umrah companies kept the visas granted to them for the months of Rajab and Sha’aban for use in the month of Ramadan.
“This practice will disrupt the ministry’s plans and the system of visa issuance which is tied to the provision of accommodation, transportation and other services,” he said.
A number of hotels and Umrah companies have complained that the new arrangements will not enable them to make long-range plans because they will be obliged to use the visas for the same month.
They said the arrangements will not satisfy their needs or help them make early contracts. “We will not be able to make our programmes for the season if we are not able to know earlier the number of visas that will be granted,” one operator who craved anonymity said.

What's this kid doing at a protest when he should be at school? Oh, right. They want to close his.
This is worth ALL three riled-up minutes, but if you must, fast-forward to 1:30. That's where he really starts to preach.

By the way, the people in charge didn't really listen. On May 23, the Chicago Board of Education voted to close 49 of the 54 area elementary schools that were on the chopping block. Asean's school, Marcus Garvey Elementary, was one of only four to survive. Hey, nicely done, guys. NOT.

GOVERNOR ADAMS OSHIOMHOLE BANS COMMERCIAL MOTOR CYCLE RIDERS IN BENIN CITY, EDO STATE, NIGERIA

GOVERNOR ADAMS OSHIOMHOLE BANS MOTOR CYCLE RIDERS IN BENIN CITY, EDO STATE, NIGERIA
MOTOR CYCLE RIDERS (OKADA)
Benin Classic 2012
Dear friends, everything considered, we have resolved as a government, effective from Monday the 17th of June 2013, bike riders will not be allowed to operate in any part of Oredo, Ikpoba Okha and Egor Local Government Areas of Edo State. These three local governments constitute the heart of Benin City. The law enforcement agencies have been informed accordingly and directed to strictly enforce this law.

There are confirmed cases of Okada riders who have been involved in kidnapping and other forms of violent crimes including robbery. We have tried as a government over the years to take steps to counsel Okada riders to observe certain codes, to watch out and ensure that criminals do not infiltrate their ranks and hide under commercial vehicles to perpetrate crime. It is clear to me now that we have not been particularly successful in this regard. More and more Okada riders have been found to be involved in various acts of violent crimes. Also, more than eighty percent of accident victims in the hospitals are bike riders, we cannot continue like this. I therefore reached the painful conclusion that it is time to do something and we cannot postpone it further.

Because of the influx of bike riders, arising from the decision of some of our neighbouring states where bike riders have been prohibited, Edo State has become a safe haven for all manners of bike riders and because they do not get enough commercial patronage, some bike riders have resorted to crime to sustain a living while posing to be bike riders.

I am convinced that we cannot allow this situation to continue. While I am very concerned about the fact of the level of unemployment in the country, and in Edo state we have our own fair share of unemployment, I am convinced that the long term interest of job creation requires that you attract investors and investment to the state. It is a settled issue that investors will not be in a hurry to go to any state that the level of crime has risen beyond acceptable level.

I am not in doubt that there are many Okada riders who are not criminals and they have no criminal intentions. I am also convinced that there are many Okada riders who are into legitimate business, unfortunately there isn’t any mechanism for us to distinguish criminals who are also bike operators and decent citizens who are doing their very best to cope with the rigours of life, this is just one sacrifice we all have to make to make our state safer. Thanks for your understanding and continuous support.

Her body was brought back to her residence around 7am on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, following the Post-mortem.
In the same day her Namaz-e-janaza took place at Sonapur Kabar Walla Masjid and she was buried at Juhu Muslim cemetery after Zohar prayer as per Islamic rites.
Bollywood actors in attendance included Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, Riteish Deshmukh, Siddharth Mallya, Sophie Choudry, Urvashi Dholakia, Prem Chopra, Ranjeet, Deepak Parashar, Sanjay Khan and Naghma in attendance.
Bollywood stars reacted with shock at her death. On June 7, 2013, a 6 page suicide note was found by her sister. The note is reported to indicate that she had planned to end her life. Below given is a transcript of Jiah's handwritten letter. These are scanned snapshots of the original letter as released by Khan's family.
“ I don’t know how to say this to you but I might as well now as I have nothing to lose. I’ve already lost everything. If you’re reading this I might have already left or about to leave. I am broken inside. You may not have known this but you affected me deeply to a point where I lost myself in loving you. Yet you tortured me everyday.
These days I see no light I wake up not wanting to wake up. There was a time I saw my life with you, a future with you. But you shattered my dreams. I feel dead inside. I’ve never given so much of myself to someone or cared so much. You returned my love with cheating and lies. It didn’t matter how many gifts I gave you or how beautiful I looked for you. I was scared of getting pregnant but I gave myself completely the pain you have caused me everyday has destroyed every bit of me, destroyed my soul.
I can’t eat or sleep or think or function. I am running away from everything. The career is not even worth it anymore. When I first met you I was driven, ambitious and disciplined. Then I fell for you, a love I thought would bring out the best in me. I don’t know why destiny brought us together. After all the pain, the rape, the abuse, the torture I have seen previously I didn’t deserve this.
I didn’t see any love or commitment from you. I just became increasingly scared that you would hurt me mentally or physically. Your life was about partying and women. Mine was you and my work. If I stay here I will crave you and miss you. So I am kissing my 10-year career and dreams goodbye. I never told you but I received a message about you. About you cheating on me. I chose to ignore it, decided to trust you. You embarrassed me. I never went out, I never went with anyone else.
I am a loyal person. I never met anyone with Karthik I just wanted you to feel how you make me feel constantly. No other woman will give you as much as I did or love you as much as I did. I can write that in my blood. Things were looking up for me here, but is it worth it when you constantly feel the pain of heartbreak when the person you love wants to abuse you or threatens to hit you or cheats on you telling other girls they are beautiful or throws you out of their house when you have no where to go and you’ve come to them out of love or when they lie to your face or they make you chase after them in their car. Or disrespects their family.
You never even met my sister. I bought your sister presents. You tore my soul. I have no reason to breathe anymore. All I wanted was love. I did everything for you. I was working for us. But you were never my partner. My future is destroyed my happiness snatched away from me. I always wished the best for you, was ready to invest what little money I had in your betterment.
You never appreciated my love, Kicked me in the face. I have no confidence or self esteem left, whatever talent whatever ambition you took it all away. You destroyed my life. It hurt me so much that I waited for you for ten days and you didn’t bother buying me something. The Goa trip was my birthday present but even after you cheated I still spent on you. I aborted our baby when it hurt me deeply. You destroyed my Christmas and my birthday dinner when I came back.
When I tried my hardest to make your birthday special. You chose to be away from me on Valentines Day. You promised me once we made it to one year we would get engaged. All you want in life is partying, your women and your selfish motives. All I wanted was you and my happiness you took both away from me. I spent money on you selflessly you would throw in my face. When I would cry for you. I have nothing left in this world to live for after this.
I wish you had loved me like I loved you. I dreamt of our future. I dreamt f our success. I leave this place with nothing but broken dreams and empty promises. All I want now is to go to sleep and never wake up again. I am nothing. I had everything. I felt so alone even while with you. You made me feel alone and vulnerable. I am so much more than this”
On June 8, 2013 Khan's Condolence meeting was held at Vile Parle Medical Club to pray Jiah. Bollywood actors in attendance included Aamir Khan, Deepika Padukone, Randhir Kapoor, Prateik Babbar, Sanjay Kapoor, Shweta Pandit, Kiran Rao, Urvashi Dholakia, Ranjeet, Deepak Parashar, Sanjay Khan and Naghma.
