Former
Governor of Bayelsa State Chief Timipre Sylva yesterday dragged the
Independent National Electoral Commission( INEC) to court claiming that
he was the flag bearer of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP)
in the last year February governorship election in the state.
The suit, which came up for mention
yesterday at the Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State,
Sylva argued that there was no basis to hold fresh primaries by the PDP,
having earlier won the January,2011 gubernatorial primaries.
It would be recalled that Sylva, had
earlier won the PDP primaries in January, 2011 before the Supreme Court
ruled that his tenure had expired.
Another primaries were held by the PDP
in November, 2011, where Sylva was excluded from participating and it
was won by Seriake Dickson.
Sylva is now praying the Federal High
Court presided over by Justice Charles Achibong, to mandate INEC to
reinstate him as the valid candidate of the PDP in the last governorship
election, which produced Dickson as governor.
According to him, the court should
direct INEC to replace the name of incumbent Governor with his own so as
to enjoy the mandate given to him.
The trial judge, Justice Charles
Archibong, who granted applications from counsels to the PDP and
incumbent governor Dickson to be joined in the case, adjourned the
matter for hearing to the 18 March.
