Oshiomhole, other govs working against LG autonomy —Labour

by Soji-Eze Fagbemi alt The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Monday, accused the state governors, including their former president and Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole of working against the local government autonomy at the ongoing public hearing on the review of 1999 Constitution.
The NLC president, Comrade Abduwaheed Omar, described as unfortunate attempt by the state governors  to influence the National and State Houses of Assembly to  scuttle local government areas (LGAs) autonomy.
Speaking  at the  opening of NLC 2012 Harmattan School in Abuja, Comrade Omar said the governors were doing everything possible to ensure the status-quo to be maintained, despite calls by overwhelming Nigerians for autonomy of local councils.
The NLC president called on the National Assembly to ignore the governors, and go ahead to review allocation formula to give more funds for the local government areas to meet their developmental challenges.
To him, local government areas must get their autonomy so that the state governors will stop the usual complaint that the local government allocations have been used to pay teachers’ and workers’ salaries.
