An Aide to President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Affairs, Alhaji Ahmed Ali Gulak has asked former Presidents and Heads of States of the country to retire honourably from active politics and accept to play noble and respectable role of elder statesmen.
Gulak spoke at a dinner party/Colloquium held on Thursday night as part of the 55th birthday anniversary of President Goodluck Jonathan, said since these leaders have had opportunities in the past to steer the ship of state, they would do well to leave politics for the younger ones who can then count on them for wise counsel.
"What I am saying is that they have had the opportunity to rule this country in the past, some have ruled for eight years and some seven years.  They have done their own bit and we are saying that they should retire and become elder statesmen to give advice from the sideline not to be involved in creating crisis," he said.
The charge came on the heels of recent scathing remarks by the former President Olusegun Obasanjo against the leadership style of Jonathan especially his handling of the Boko Haram menace which he adjudged to be weak and not decisive enough.
Gulak advised the former  men of power to borrow a leave from their counterparts in other climes and steer clear of unnecessary controversies.
He said they would better be appreciated if they accept their role as statesmen and try to offer unbiased advice to those in charge of affairs of governance.
He said the President would rather go by the rule of law than employ brute force as was the case in the past.
He said the Federal Government under President Jonathan has tried to adhere strictly to the doctrine of rule of law.
