Breaking News: Ipas office in Abuja on fire
Fire on Thursday gutted the Abuja office of Ipas-Nigeria, an international NGO that promotes the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women.
The fire which started in the early hours of Thursday was said to have destroyed millions of naira worth of equipment and property.
Ipas Country Director, Dr. Ejike Oji, said: “Property and equipment worth millions of naira belonging to Ipas-Nigeria, an international NGO that promotes the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women were lost in a fire incident that engulfed its office in the early hours of today (Thursday, January 31, 2013).
“The fire started at about 2 a.m. and the inferno totally destroyed the organization’s newly furnished conference room and an adjourning office belonging to a private firm.”
Even though the actual cause of the fire had not been ascertained, he said that security men on duty had complained of frequent power fluctuation the previous night and the early hours of the day.
He said that it could not be ruled out that power surge, which happens sometimes when electricity is restored, caused the inferno.
He commended the officers and men of Asokoro Fire Service Station for their timely intervention, saying that the expansive four storey office building would have been destroyed if not for the gallantry of the fire fighters.
On whether the organization would still go ahead to celebrate its forty years anniversary, Dr. Oji said that Ipas-Nigeria would not be demoralized by the incident.
He said the organization would continue to promote the reproductive health and rights of women to the best of its ability.
