When you win the lotto you expect to keep the winnings.
One woman lost her lotto winnings because she bought the ticket with a stolen credit card.
The Oregon Court of Appeals has ruled that the city police in southwestern Oregon can get a cash prize of $1,000,000 originally awarded to a woman who authorities say bought a lottery ticket through illegal means.
The local news media reports that 45-year-old Christina Elizabeth Goodenow argued that stripping her of the profits was excessive punishment.
Goodenow stole the identity of the deceased mother of her boyfriend, and used her Visa card to make $12,000 in purchases, including the winning lottery ticket. She did not object to the crimes and was sentenced to probation.
As part of the judgment, the lottery money was seized by the Medford Police Department. Police agencies in Oregon can collect the money earned through criminal activity. Goodenow, in an attempt to maintain profits, filed an appeal.
