Introducing Gravity Light – the $5 lamp powered by gravity that wants to replace kerosene lamps

It is always exciting to find interesting technology solutions that can make the lives of people on the continent easier and more efficient. A new technology, “Gravity Light” has been making waves online recently.
Gravity Light, a $5 lamp that is powered solely by Gravity and which does not use batteries or fuel is set to provide reprieve for people frustrated with the high cost and health dangers of kerosene lamps.

Gravity Light which was created as a replacement for expensive, high polluting kerosene lanterns was created as a side project by Martin Riddiford and Jim Reeves.

The Gravity Light lamp has no operating costs after its initial purchase price and comes with an adjustable lamp and ballast bag. The bag can then be filled with sand, rocks or soil allowing users to hang it from the lamp to turn the bulb on. The lamp typically lasts for about 30 minutes and can be recharged using solar power.

Martin and Jim posted an explanatory video about the lamp on crowdfunding site, Indiegogo asking for about $50,000. People all over the world have been so excited about the innovation that it has so far exceeded this goal and has raised over $313,000 as at the time of this writing. The crowdfunding campaign is still on-going for the next 13 days. If you are excited about this technology, go ahead and fund the project on Indiegogo here.
